ソナタ第2番はアムランが東京のリサイタルで取り上げ、日本のフアンにカプースチンという作曲家を広める一旦を担った作品。
本格的な4楽章構成の作品だが、第1楽章から華やかな躍動感が目覚しく、たちまち私達をカプースチン・ワールドへと誘ってくれる。
実際このソナタはカプースチンの諸ソナタの中でも、もっとも燦燦たる演奏効果の上がる陽性の曲だ。
第3楽章で特有の夜の雰囲気が出るのもなかなかいい。

一方で第3番は15分以上ある長い一つの楽章からなる作品で、即興性に富んでいる。

このアルバムにはピアノの入らない2作品が合わせて収録されている。
録音時期もピアノソロ作品が91年録音であるが、他の2作品は2001年の録音となっている。

独奏チェロのための作品は、カプースチンの作品をよく知っているザゴリンスキーのチェロである。
ザゴリンスキーはカプースチンとは親友で、多くのチェロを含む作品は彼のためのものだ。
さて、この独奏チェロのための作品は、ピアノ世界とはまた趣きを異にした世界で、なんともクラシックな味わいが出ており、
この作曲者の多様性を垣間見る事ができる。

最後にチェロとアルト･サックスのためという風変わりな編成の作品が収録されている。
この2つの楽器の音色をいかに操るかという面白い注目点があるが、やや軽めのサックスの音色で、
対旋律風にしてみたり、チェロをピッチカートでベースのように響かせたり、なかなか面白く聴けた。

カプースチンの作品には現代音楽的な無調性的なものと、伝統的な調性・コード進行・和声理論によるものが混在しているが、このアルバムの一曲目を飾るピアノ・ソナタ2番は、「８つの演奏会用エチュード」などに代表される後者で、24の前奏曲などの作品が肌に合わなかった方にもぜひ聴いて頂きたい1枚。
演奏はカプースチンらしい「突進する重戦車のごとき」タッチで、冒頭がロックのようなソナタ2番に大変マッチした演奏である。
他に収録されているチェロやサクソフォンとの小品も素晴らしい。

このＣＤで特に注目するのはピアノソナタ第３番とアンダンテです。
ソナタ第３番はそれまでの作品ではあまり聴かれない、冷たく叙情的な響きを持っています。
特に曲頭から１／３くらいまでは、極めて濃密かつクールな演奏で、カプースチン格好良すぎる！という感じです。アンダンテはゆっくりとしたテンポのスイングで、寛いだ雰囲気は格別です。
