７０年代初頭のドイツに、faust の名の下に音楽を作っていた集団がいて、彼らは当時、非常に特殊な環境にいたそうです。
つまり、ある場所の廃校を改造し専任のエンジニアとそこに住み、レコーディング生活を行うことをレコード会社に保証させることに成功した、前代未聞の連中だったのです（何の実績もないのに！）。

そこの連中とつるんでいた anthony moore から誘いを受けた仲間の peter blegvad と、 moore の恋人 dagmar krause が slapp happy と称し、faust の根城兼スタジオで録音したのがこの１ｓｔ。バック演奏やエンジニア・プロデュースも faust 組で固めてます。当初ポップ・ソングをバカにしていた連中が軽いもんだとばかりに挑んだそれは、やってみたらやはり難しく、結果開き直って出来たのがこの傑作。

どうしようもなくなって自分らなりの直球を投げ込んでみた結果、微妙な変化球を発明してしまった感アリ。３ｒｄの頃の velvet underground の趣も感じます。

ヘンリーカウ周辺の音楽を漁っていくと必ず出会うことになるであろうバンド。
ボーカルのダグマー・クラウゼはヘンリーカウでもマイクをとる。

アヴァンギャルドなポップということで世間には通っているが、ヘンリーカウとの協作であるdesperate straightsなどの与えた印象が強く、このアルバムではポップな面が大半を占めている。しかし、アンソニー・ムーアはやはりただのポップとしてこの作品を調理してはいない。ところどころにみられるひねくれたアレンジはやはり彼にしか成せない職人技といっても過言ではないだろう。

いくつか曲の紹介を簡単にしてこのレビューを終わらせることにする。

mono plane
ビートがなんともファンキーな曲。十年はさきをいっている音。

blue flower
ヴェルベッツを思い起こさずにはいられない最高な一曲。これだけのためにこの作品をかっても損は無い。

sort of
なんとも昭和の日本歌謡を思い起こすメロ。インストであるが後の作品でダグマーのボーカルが乗ることになる。

heading for kyoto
京都ですか。千年の都。お茶漬けでもいかが？

Slapp Happyのデヴュー作である。1972年５月。彼らの初々しい歌声が聴ける。ここではKrauseだけがヴォーカルをとっているのではないことがわかる。Krauseの歌い方も後のHenry Cowとやっているときのような緊張感はなく、アメリカン・ポップスを連想させるように陽気である。5.は私にはスティビーワンダーの"迷信”に似ていると思うのだが。。。これは70年代の軽いポップス感覚でも十分に聞ける。ごてごてのプログレファンには物足りないだろうな。
