オリジナルレコーディングは1978年で、今年2005年の8月に初CD化したアルバム。
このアルバムはサルサの先駆者にしてラテンジャズを推進したラテン音楽界の重鎮、
エディ・パルミエリがキューバ、アフロ系住民の信仰の呪術をテーマにしたアルバムとなっている。
だからといって、おどろおどろしいものではなく、むしろエネルギッシュにあふれていて、
そしてその濃厚な雰囲気がパルミエリにより、親しみやすい。
中でも1,3,4が土着色の強いもので
2,5がレア・グルーヴ色が強いファンキーな作り。

1はキューバのコンバ・コンパルサというリズムにブラジルのクイーカが加わっており、
総体的に黒人の土着色が強く出ているナンバー。
タイトルについて簡単な説明をすると、ヴードゥーはハイチで信仰されているもので、ゾンビで有名な宗教。
この信仰は元々西アフリカのルクミ族が信仰していたものであり、その神格を『オチャ』といい、
ハイチ（ヴードゥー教）では『ロア』、ブラジルでは『マクン』という。
そのマクンを神格とした宗教を『マクンバ』という。

2もラテンのノリとレア・グルーヴが合い、ディスコに栄えるナンバーであろう。

サルサという音楽の可能性を極限まで追及した素晴らしい作品ではありますが、
発表当時は評判が芳しくなく、セールス的にも失敗だった作品。
組曲の４が実験色強く、ちょっと難解に感じられたためでしょうか。
現在の耳で聞けばそんなこともないんですが。
あと、世界初CD化というのは事実と違います。
1995年に同じSONY系のレーベルでCD化されています。
その時は、この素晴らしいオリジナルジャケとは異なる、実に味気ないジャケでしたので、
オリジナルジャケで世界初CD化というのが正しいです。
