数あるベスト盤の中では、新旧の代表曲が網羅されており、通史・入門も兼ねたお手頃版。
個性の強いアーティストの提供曲に恵まれていて、しかもそれを自分のものとして消化して歌いこなす力は、やはり表現の世界で生きる者の術だろうか？
近年の「小さな祈り」（小田和正提供）・「空蝉」（一青窈提供）はこのアルバムで知った楽曲だが、特に癖のあるこの二曲に取り組んだことに拍手を送りたい。
長年にわたり「中村節」を築いてきたベテランながらも、難曲に挑戦する新境地への意欲も旺盛である。
「海を抱きしめて」は、ドラマのエンディングかつシングルのカップリングながらも人気曲。
今回も当然のように収録された。
アルバム曲からのチョイス「100年の勇気」の収録も嬉しい。
こんなに激しい「人生の応援歌」を歌える、いかす「オヤジ」がいただろうか？
俳優・歌手、どちらでもデビューから第一線。
この存在感なら当然であろう。

雅俊さんのベストものはいっぱい出ているが、近作までしっかりと収めた１枚ものって、そういえばなかったよなぁ、と思っていたところにリリースされたのが、この『The Songs』だった。
いきなりメガ・ヒットとなったデビュー曲「ふれあい」から、この時点での最新曲「空蝉（うつせみ）」までの、充実した全17曲。「後半の曲は要らない」と思う人もいるかもしれないが、近年の楽曲の中からけっこうおいしいところが集めてあるので、聴いて損はない。小田和正作品の「小さな祈り」では、珍しくアクのない素直な歌唱が聴ける。また「想い出のクリフサイド・ホテル」や「哀しい人」などは“カラオケ映え”のするよい歌なので、このCDでしっかり聴いておくといいと思う。
ところでその「哀しい人」だが、ホントに名曲だ。心が傷ついている人、悩んでいる人、苦しんでいる人、そのすべての人にじっくりと聴いてほしい（個人的には、「今の」横田めぐみさんにぜひ聴かせてあげたい、と思っている。彼女は、『俺たちの旅』の“カースケ”は覚えているかもしれないが、『ゆうひが丘』の“総理”は知らないのだ…）。

特典DVDには「空蝉」「哀しい人」「過ぎた日にそっと花を」のプロモーション・ビデオ、「恋人も濡れる街角」「心の色」「いつか街で会ったなら」のテレビ出演時の映像を収録（約23分）。
なお、この初回盤はレアだが、DVDなしの『The Songs（通常盤）』は新品で入手可能。その他に「あなたにあげたい愛がある」「100年の勇気」「過ぎた日にそっと花を」「小さな祈り」「空蝉」以外の全曲は、これよりちょっとだけ高い、30曲入りの２枚組『SONGS ON TV』（「青春貴族」「青春試考」「燃える囁き」「瞬間（ひととき）の愛」「もう一度抱きたい」も収録）でも聴くことができる。
