   厳格な父に育てられたオスカーだったが、競馬をきっかけにギャンブルに飲めりこんでいった。一方、オーストラリアでは進歩的に育てられたルシンダは母親亡き後莫大な遺産を継いだ。そしてまわりの人間は彼女に結婚を勧めるが、彼女には興味がない。そんなとき、孤独な彼女はギャンブルに手を出し、ハマってしまう。それ以来、周囲の雑音から逃れるために、船に乗り込む。そこにはオスカーもいた。そしてふたりはギャンブルを通じて心通わせあう。
   オスカーはレイフ・ファインズ、ルシンダはケイト・ブランシェットという二大演技派の共演作。まだケイトが『エリザベス』で映画界の話題をひとりさらう前に出演した作品だ。厳格な父から開放されるのは、ギャンブルやってるときだけという繊細で孤独な青年オスカーをレイフ・ファインズはエレガントに好演。ケイトは、女は結婚という田舎ならではの風習に耐え切れない現代的な娘をみずみずしく演じている。一見コンゲーム映画と思う人もいるかもしれないが、あくまでふたりの青年と淑女の心の成長物語になっている。(斉藤香)

ちょっと風変わりな、カード(トランプ)が引き合わせたラブ・ストーリーです。今では超有名な、ケイト・ブランシェットのメジャー映画デビュー作。
カード好きで奔放なルシンダ役で、後々『エリザベス』で主演をはる彼女の演技力はこの時から光っています。そして、古き慣習にとらわれながらもルシンダに思いを寄せるオスカー神父にレイフ・ファインズ。今までにないカワイイ彼が見れます!
オスカーとルシンダの恋に立ち塞がるのは運命や時代、信仰心。そういった障害に勝つか負けるか?出会えそうで出会えない、「愛してる」と伝えられない苦おしさ。ポーカーの様な駆け引きのラブ・ストーリーです。

~『理想の結婚』のクラシカルな美しさとコミカルな演技もよかったけれど、こちらのちょっとエキセントリックな姿もまた格別。ケイト・ブランシェットはその後もいろいろな映画に出ているけれど、多くは便利なカメレオン俳優として脇に置かれているだけなんじゃないだろうか。レイフ・ファインズも良かった。彼女を活かすのには相手役の存在感も必要なんだなぁ~~。世間からちょっとずれた二人の織りなすストーリーは、切なくさわやかな後味が残った。~

純粋なゆえに不器用にしか生きられない二人。絵画を見るような美しい映像が印象的です。ラストは神様が下された審判なのでしょう。
