世の中には生まれたときから変わり者という人間がいる。持って生まれたモノは変わり者としての自己とそれへの誠実さのみ。誠実であればある程、本来はコミュニケーションのために為されるはずの自己表現は奇妙な・なじみの無い・不可解なものになってしまう。ヴァン・ダー・グラーフ（以下VdG）のリーダー、ピーター・ハミルはそんな「変わり者（stranger)」と「世慣れた人（worldly man)」との間を往還しながら、今も、共感を呼び覚ます一つの「謎」として、音楽による自己表現という作業を着実に、誠実に、続けている（出来不出来はあるけど）。
「つねに二つのVdGがあった」とハミルは言う（「Maida Vale」ライナー）。スタジオで「ポップな」レコードを作るVdGと、ライヴで予想出来ない程のノイズをまき散らすVdGと。「カオスとコントロールされたもの、疾風怒濤と静寂」の共存が「VdGの目的であり存在理由だった」。
オルガンが抜け、二人の弦楽器奏者を加えた特異な編成でのこのライブで、ハミルは殆ど我を忘れたかのような崩壊寸前のテンションの高さを見せている。スタジオ盤での「スティル・ライフ」がゴシックの大聖堂だとするなら、ここでの演奏はまさに廃墟だ。かつて「ハウス･ウィズ･ノー･ドア」で、神のいない世界でモナドのように孤立した宇宙論的「ひきこもり」の凄絶な心情を歌ったハミルが、『スティル・ライフ』を頂点として、世俗的な人間関係の確執とバンド活動存続の危機を経、絶望の叫びに満ちたソロ作『オーバー』の泥濘の後に（「ポップ」なスタジオアルバムをはさんで）『バイタル』で辿り着いた音の廃墟は、だがタイトルが示すように、破滅の後だからこそ見出すことのできた、生命の躍動の瞬間の暗い輝きに満ち溢れている。
1978年の時点で、売れる事よりも・技術的な洗練よりも、自己表現への衝動に忠実だったという意味で誰よりも「パンク」だった「プログレ」バンドの、最高に格好いい「ワースト・アルバム」です。

1978年リリース。初期の名盤を聴いてきた者がこのライヴを聴くと一番感じるのはギターへのこだわり、そして明らかなハード・ロック・ライヴ指向だと思う。ピーター・ハミルの意図が出たアルバムである。歪みが出したかったのだ。

歪みの中でストリングスとギターが作り上げる音楽は今までのハミルと違って聴こえる。ストリングスをバックに朗々と歌い上げる『Still Life』に特にシビれた。

まずデジタル・リマスタリングされて以前より音の粒立ちがよくなっている。最初にＣＤ化されたときはイコライザーで調節しないとエレキ・ギターの音がこもって聴こえエレキ・ベースの歪んだ音が唸って聴こえたがそれもなくなりバランスが良くなった。
さて作品は完全にピーター・ハミル主導、彼のソロ・アルバムでのエレキ・ギターへの傾倒そのままの荒々しいライヴである。
このハミルのエレキ・ギターへの傾倒が、それまでオルガン中心だったＶＤＧのサウンドを保守しようとした他のメンバーとの乖離を生んでしまいバンド解散の要因になった。
ヴァイオリン、チェロの緊張感のあるバッキング、歪みきったエレキ・ベースの轟音、これにピーター・ハミルのエレキ・ギターと絶叫にも似たヴォーカルが絡む。
アルバム全編凄まじい緊張感と破壊力で当時現れたパンク、ニュー・ウエイヴも超える激しい演奏を繰り広げている。
この破壊力はＫＩＮＧ　ＣＲＩＭＳＯＮのＵＳＡに匹敵するものであった。
このアルバムは当時セックス・ピストルズのジョン・ライドンが高く評価していたのが印象的だった。
この頃ＹＥＳは迷走しＧＥＮＥＳＩＳはＰＯＰ路線に転向する寸前の時代、ＫＩＮＧ　ＣＲＩＭＳＯＮはすでに休止していた時代。
いわば１９６０年代後半から隆盛を極めたプログレッシヴ・ロックが
英国で終焉を告げた貴重な記録となった作品である。
これ以降はヒット・チャートとは無縁のアンダーグラウンドでの活動が主流、マリリオン、エニドなどがその伝統を引き継ぐのみとなった。
エレキ・ギター中心の音楽が好きな人は是非聴いてもらいたい。
