　原色を主体とした美術や衣装はカラフルで、撮影が名手ビットリオ・ストラーロとくればビジュアル的には申し分ない。やりすぎの感もあるメーキャップもコミックの世界をイメージしたと思えばそれほど不快ではなかった。ただ中心になるストーリーがいまひとつだったのと、ちょっと老けたウォーレン・ベイティだけがメーキャップなしで徹底的に二枚目役なのが鼻についてしまうのが難点。主人公は別の若手俳優が演じて、ベイティは監督に専念した方が良かったのではないかと思う。
　アル・パチーノ（実に楽しげに怪演している！）、マドンナ、ダスティン・ホフマン、ジェームズ・カーン、ポール・ソルビノ、ディック・バン・ダイク、チャールズ・ダーニングなど競演者は豪華な顔ぶれだったが、当時、実生活で恋人同士だったマドンナとの競演は、楽しいコミックの世界の映画化の中では生々しくて不快感が先立ってしまう。逆に恋人役のテスを演じたグレン・ヘドリーはなかなか良かった。しかし、これだけの豪華キャストを集められるのも製作・監督としてのベイティの才能と影響力の強さなのだろう。
　良くも悪くもベイテイのワンマン映画だが、映像的には一見の価値あり。

内容をよく知らない映画を購入する時ジャケットは第一印象重要ですよね。このジャケットは昭和40年代の安っぽい漫画みたいで正直躊躇しましたが色々賞を取ってるということだったのでダメもとで買ってみたんです。意外と、というと失礼になるでしょうが面白かったです。
トレイシーのわざとらしい黄色のコートも、マドンナのこれ見よがしのお色気プラス冷たいキャラも、オリバーツイストのような貧乏少年がいい子に変貌していくとこも、こうやって羅列してみると確かに40年代のドラマの要素頂いてる感じですが、それが嫌味にならずある種懐かしさも感じるまとめ方で、結構気に入っています。
