1965年米国ロサンゼルスで結成。バンド名はオルダス・ハクスリーの著書『知覚の扉』から。オリジナル・メンバーはジム・モリソン(vo)、レイ・マンザレク(key)、ジョン・デンズモア(ds)、ロビー・クリーガー(g)。66年エレクトラ・レコードと契約、67年にアルバム『ハートに火をつけて』でデビュー。アルバム収録の「ハートに火をつけて」が67年夏に大ヒットを記録。文学的な詞と個性的なサウンドでヒット曲・話題作を発表、またジム・モリソンのセクシャルなパフォーマンスによるライヴも評判となり、カウンター・カルチャーを代表するバンドとして高い人気を得るが、71年7月にジムが滞在先のパリで急死。残った3人で活動を続けるが、73年に解散。その後も未発表ライヴや伝記映画の公開などで注目を集めた。さらにマンザレク、クリーガーを中心に元カルトのイアン・アストベリーをヴォーカリストに迎え、“ザ・ドアーズ・オブ・21stセンチュリーの名で2003年に来日を果たした。
