【プロフィール】
1965年米国ロサンゼルスで結成。バンド名はオルダス・ハクスリーの著書『知覚の扉』から。オリジナル・メンバーはジム・モリソン(vo)、レイ・マンザレク(key)、ジョン・デンズモア(ds)、ロビー・クリーガー(g)。66年エレクトラ・レコードと契約、67年にアルバム『ハートに火をつけて』でデビュー。アルバム収録の「ハートに火をつけて」が67年夏に大ヒットを記録。文学的な詞と個性的なサウンドでヒット曲・話題作を発表、またジム・モリソンのセクシャルなパフォーマンスによるライヴも評判となり、カウンター・カルチャーを代表するバンドとして高い人気を得るが、71年7月にジムが滞在先のパリで急死。残った3人で活動を続けるが、73年に解散。その後も未発表ライヴや伝記映画の公開などで注目を集めた。さらにマンザレク、クリーガーを中心に元カルトのイアン・アストベリーをヴォーカリストに迎え、“ザ・ドアーズ・オブ・21stセンチュリーの名で2003年に来日を果たした。

ドアーズの３rd『太陽を待ちながら』。
前２作があまりにも神懸かった作品であったため、それらに比べると多少評価が落ちる本作。確かにジム・モリソンの狂気じみた歌詞が少し弱くなっている印象を受けるのと、「ハロー・アイ・ラヴ・ユー」など曲自体も全体的にポップな曲が多くなっています。

それでも「ラヴ・ストリート」や「夏は去りゆく」等、ドアーズらしい怪しい雰囲気に包まれた曲も収録されています。また、「名もなき兵士」では演劇的な挿入部もあり、彼らの新たな側面が見れます。さらに注目なのは、続く「スパニッシュ・キャラバン」です。スパニッシュ・ギターとジム・モリソンの陰鬱なボーカルが絶妙に重なるこの曲は、その後狂ったようなキーボードが絡み大きな展開を見せる幻想的な名曲です。

また、ロビー・クリーガー作詞の「川は知っている」も意外とジム・モリソンに合った隠れた名曲です。
“信じてくれないか。川が言ったんだ。とても優しい声で‥‥。”この部分など、ジム・モリソンの暗い歌声にすごく合っています。

本作よりも『モリソン・ホテル』や『Ｌ．Ａ．ウーマン』の方がアルバムとしての完成度は高いのかもしれませんが、個人的にはブルース色が強いそれらの作品よりも本作で聴けるキーボード主体のサウンドの方が好きなので、私は１st、２ndに次いで本作をドアーズのベスト３に選びます。前２作を聴いてハマッた方は是非本作も聴いてみることをお薦めします。

尚、タイトル曲の「太陽を待ちながら」はこの時点では完成していなかったらしく、後の『モリソン・ホテル』に収録されています。

ドアーズの３枚目のアルバム。メンバー間のバランスが崩れ始めながらも発表された今作は「ラブストリート」、「ノット　トゥ　タッチ　ザ　アース」などドアーズを語る上では外せない名曲が含まれていますが、やはり前２作に比べるとどうしても目劣りしてしまう。それでも前２作に比べれば…という話であり、ドアーズファンは納得して聴けるのではないだろうか？個人的には「ソフトパレード」より全然好きなアルバム。

私は12歳の時に初めてドアーズを聴きました。もちろんそんなケツの青いガキにドアーズがミュージックシーンに及ぼした影響やロックのカリスマであるジムモリソンの魅力など分かるはずがありません。実際はジムモリソンの名前すらしらなかったんですけどね。でも、単純にかっこいいと思った。安物のテープに録ったものを安物のラジカセで何度も繰り返して聴いては悦に浸っていたのをいまでもよく覚えています。あれから俺も万を越えるアルバムを聴いた(変な言い方かもしれないが)、マニアの域に達しつつある。そしてあれこれ講釈たれたがる自分がいることに気付くことがあります。そんな時には、ドアーズを聴いてあの頃の自分を思い出そうとします。もしかしたら、いまよりもあの頃の方が純粋に音楽を楽しんでいたのかもしれません。私にとってドアーズとはそんな存在なのです。
