【プロフィール】
1974年に米国ロサンゼルスで結成。オリジナル・メンバーはデヴィッド・リー・ロス(vo)、エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレン(g)、マイケル・アンソニー(b)、アレックス・ヴァン・ヘイレン(ds)。78年にアルバム『炎の導火線』でデビュー。エディのテクニカルで超絶的なギターとデヴィッドのパワフルなヴォーカル、派手なアクションで人気を集め、83年発表の6作目『1984』と初の全米ナンバー・ワンとなったシングル「ジャンプ」の大ヒットで頂点に立つ。86年にデイヴが脱退してソロ活動を始めたため、後任のヴォーカリストに元モントローズのサミー・ヘイガーが加入、アメリカを代表する正統的ハード・ロック・バンドへと成長する。サミーの脱退後、98年に元エクストリームのゲイリー・シェローンが参加、『ヴァン・ヘイレンIII』を発表するが、ゲイリーは脱退。エディの病気治療のため活動停止していたが、サミーが復帰、2004年に全米ツアーを行ない、活動を再開している。

5.0 out of 5 stars ヴァンヘイレンの最高傑作, 2006/1/15
サミー・ヘイガーのボーカルとエディ・ヴァン・ヘイレンのギターが見事に融合し、スピード感があり非常にヘビーなサウンドを作っている。
「パウンドケーキ」「プレジャードーム」などどれをとっても素晴らしい曲ばかりだ。また、ここで忘れてならないのはアレックス・ヴァン・ヘイレンの力強いドラミング。
アルバム名に疑問はあるが、内容に疑問の余地は無い。ヴァンヘイレンのアルバムから１枚選べと言われれば、個人的には迷わずこれにする。

　サミー加入後のフルパワーロックアルバム。パウンドケーキからトップ・オブ・ザ・ワールドまで、止まることなくロックが駆け抜ける。
エディの卓越した技術とサミーの歌唱力が融合した、最高のロックが詰まっている。
　ライブでもこのアルバムからの曲が多い。つまり、サミー加入後の作品の中で、一番のロックなアルバムだと思う（個人的に）。

　このアルバムのツアーの様子を収録したＣＤ＆ＤＶＤも、どうぞ。

ミディアムテンポでファンキーなナンバーが多い。したがって聴いてるとダルくなってくる。ヴァン・ヘイレンはライブで更に素晴らしくなるバンド。でも、このアルバムの楽曲はライブで演っても生えない。あくまで私見ですが。。これを”最高！”って思えるヒトもいるみたいですからね。
