前作『1984』からの「ジャンプ」の大ヒットにより、アメリカン・ハードロック・シーンの頂点を極めたヴァン・ヘイレン。デイヴ・リー・ロスに代わり、サミー・ヘイガーを迎えての新生ヴァン・へイレンによる第1弾。「ホワイ・キャント・ディス・ビー・ラヴ」、「ドリームス」を収録した通算7作目。
全米アルバムチャート：第1位（1986年作品）
【プロフィール】
1974年に米国ロサンゼルスで結成。オリジナル・メンバーはデヴィッド・リー・ロス(vo)、エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレン(g)、マイケル・アンソニー(b)、アレックス・ヴァン・ヘイレン(ds)。78年にアルバム『炎の導火線』でデビュー。エディのテクニカルで超絶的なギターとデヴィッドのパワフルなヴォーカル、派手なアクションで人気を集め、83年発表の6作目『1984』と初の全米ナンバー・ワンとなったシングル「ジャンプ」の大ヒットで頂点に立つ。86年にデイヴが脱退してソロ活動を始めたため、後任のヴォーカリストに元モントローズのサミー・ヘイガーが加入、アメリカを代表する正統的ハード・ロック・バンドへと成長する。サミーの脱退後、98年に元エクストリームのゲイリー・シェローンが参加、『ヴァン・ヘイレンIII』を発表するが、ゲイリーは脱退。エディの病気治療のため活動停止していたが、サミーが復帰、2004年に全米ツアーを行ない、活動を再開している。

　ＶＨの不朽の名作。今回の再発ＣＤは、リマスター表示がありませんが、
何と~、音質が向上してます！全国のＶＨマニアは、買い直してでも聞く価値のあるアルバムです。ちなみにジャケの筋肉男はデイブを表しているそうで、裏のジャケにすると、ＶＨメンバーの鉄球に潰されてるってオチです。当時はソロが売れて勢いあったデイブ様でしたが、今となっては・・・、写真の通りとなってしまった感じです。

今まで色んなアルバムを聴いてきましたけど、このバンドのこれに勝るアルバムを知りません。ハード、ポップとヴァラエティーにとんだ楽曲、またその流れは非の打ちどころがない。
洋楽聴かない人にも聴きやすいアルバムなんじゃないかな？
『dreams』を押す方が多いでしょうが、俺のオススメは『5150』ですね。

当時、大学さぼって部屋でウダウダFM聞いてると、このアルバムの特集やっててすぐ買いに‥。サミー・ヘイガーがボーカルになり、ハードな中にも息の抜けるバラードあり楽しめます。エディの泣きのギター？も聴ける20年前のアルバムなのだ！
