With "The Big Beat" Art Blakey introduced a highly original saxophonist and composer to the jazz world. Wayne Shorter's "The Chess Players" and "Lester Left Town" have since become jazz standards. The album also gave the Jazz Messengers a hit with Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere" and their version of "It's Only A Paper Moon" is hard bop at its most exciting.

リー・モーガン(trumpet), ウェイン・ショーター(tenor sax), ボビー・ティモンズ(piano),
ジミー・メリット(bass), アート・ブレイキー(drums) 1960年3月6日録音

本当に楽しい一枚。そして馴染み易い一枚だ。日本人なんかに最も好まれる感じかもね。
ファンキーな香りとビートは残しつつも、とにかく全曲メロディアスでキャッチーなので
2〜3回も聞けば、すぐ鼻唄で歌ってるぐらいだ。そういう意味では、やはりショーター色
が強いのかな。彼の先見性、才能が如実に顕れてる作品だと思う。

だが演奏はとにかくリズム陣がいいですよ。ブレイキーのタフなビートは勿論だが、ここでの
ジミー・メリットは好演だ。骨太のいい音出すんだな〜これがまたさ、屋台骨としてしっかり
バンドのグルーヴを支えてるね。

そして我が道をゆくピアニスト、ボビー・ティモンズがカッコいい！特に[3]の「Politely」
の最初のテーマが終わった後の、パワフルに連打、連打、連打でのソロの入り方がカッコよ
すぎるでしょ！鼻血出るぐらいカッコいいね！うん。
後彼はコンポーザーとしても類まれな才能を持った人だが、彼の代表曲といえば「モーニン」
だが、本作の[4]に収録されてる「Dat Dere」も聞けば聞くほど味が出る名曲ですよ！是非
聞いて欲しいです。

長くなりましたが、総じて簡単に言えば愉快でノリノリの一枚です。
ジャケットの写真に写るブレイキーの楽しそうな顔を眺めながら聴こう！！

ジャズメッセンジャーズ１９６０年の録音。
このモダンジャズを代表するビッグネームに、
ベニー･ゴルソンに代わり新しくウェイン･ショーターが
音楽監督として就任し、約半年後に録音された作品。

今までのファンキージャズの路線を継承しつつも
新しい音を求められていたジャズメッセンジャーズ。
音楽監督としてその才能を遺憾なく発揮した
ウェイン･ショーターの影響は、加入半年にして
絶大であったといわざるを得ない。

それにしても思い切った人選といえよう。
新人だったウェイン･ショーター(ts)を始め、
当時２１才だったリー･モーガン(tp)
ボビー･ティモンズ(p)、ジミー･メリット(b)。
どれをとっても個性溢れるメンバーの面々。
しかし、若い。そんな若いアーティストに
思い切って音楽監督を任せたり、作曲編曲を
任せてしまうのが、アート･ブレーキーなのだ。

現場の事は任せて、影から見守っていてくれる。
そんな大きな存在がバンドリーダーとしての
アート･ブレイキーの姿なのだ。

「サキーナのヴィジォン」「ポライトリー」
「ダット･デア」「レスター･レフト･ダウン」
の４曲は甲乙つけがたい名曲である。
いずれもファンキーで非常にタイトな
締まった音作りがされている。これらは正に
ウェイン･ショーター時代の幕開け
と呼ぶにふさわしい音なのかも知らない。

｢Mosaic｣に続きRVG Editionという事で購入しましたが、これもやはり…リマスター大失敗でした。
音はくぐもってミドルだけ強調されて混濁しノイズも入り、サックスも迫力が無いです。RVG Editionというだけで期待するのはもうどうかなと思います。
廃盤になった以前のUS盤CDの方が断っ然良いです！というかそのままで良い。バランスが崩れるとこうも違って聴こえるのかと思います…非常に残念です。
もちろんこのアルバムはウェイン入りメッセンジャーズを代表する作品で、｢Roots & Herbs｣と共にもっと評価されるべき作品と思います。ブレイキーらしさも尊重しながら新しい風を導入するウェインの意外な器用さが聴けます。
