   米ソ冷戦下における核戦争の恐怖を、キューブリック監督が徹底的に皮肉ったブラックコメディである。正式な題名は『博士の異常な愛情／または私は如何にして心配するのを止めて水爆を愛するようになったか』。
   アメリカ空軍基地の司令官が突然発狂し、ソ連の戦略核基地攻撃命令を出してしまう。しかし、ソ連側は攻撃を受けると自動的に反撃する、人類滅亡爆弾で応戦。緊迫した状況のなか、ついに両国主脳はホットラインで和解する。だが1機の米軍爆撃機が、それを知らずに任務を遂行してしまう。
 『ピンク・パンサー』シリーズのクルーゾー警部でおなじみのイギリスの名優ピーター・セラーズが、米大統領、英国軍大佐、マッドサイエンティストの1人3役を怪演。ストレンジラブ博士のヒトラー総統をパロった大演説シーンは必見だ。（山内拓哉）

先に「コレクターズ・エディション」（以下、旧盤）を購入してたのですが、そっちの方がイイと思った。まず特典について、「解説書」と「ピーター・セラーズに関するインタビュー集」は良いとしても、旧盤と大差なく、キューブリック好きとしてはこの程度の特典では満足できないでしょう。そして何よりも、この画面サイズは何？キューブリックは本作をスタンダードとビスタの両方のサイズを使って撮影してるのに！これじゃあスタンダードの上下がチョン切れちゃってるじゃないの！コノー、チョンチョン！

40周年を記念して発売された特別版。画像は綺麗になり、サウンドもDTSが加わり迫力が増した。本編には大満足だが、お目当ての特典が少々残念。珍しい映像ではあるが収録時間の短さと、メイキングが当時の冷戦状況の解説がメインなのが寂しい。ブックレットも力不足を感じる。また別の映画の予告編を多数特典映像に入れているのも疑問。折角の記念ディスクなのだから、パイ投げ等の未収録映像を入れて特典を充実して欲しかった。特典内容と価格が折り合わない気がした。50周年の頃には特典満載のセットの発売を期待したい。

言うまでもなく、傑作揃いのスタンリー・キューブリック作品の中でも、「時計じかけのオレンジ」と並ぶ屈指の大傑作。映画は総合芸術であるが、本当に全てのパートが超クールで、その風刺性もずば抜けている。この当時の世界情勢を考えると、今更ながら、この映画の凄さに、心底敬服する。星を5つならず、10は捧げたい位だ。今回、40周年スペシャル・エディションと言う事で、dts仕様＆五種類のメーキングドキュメンタリーが収録されるらしいが、三年前に発売されたコレクターズ・エディションの中のメーキングが極めて秀抜だったので、これ以上、何が出てくるのか、興味深々。個人的には、撮影したものの、映画全体の緊張感＆リズムを壊すとの理由でカットされてしまった伝説の「パイ投げシーン」を、是非とも観てみたいのだが、、、。完全主義者のキューブリックの存命時ならともかく、亡くなった今、公表される可能性って、あると思いませんか？
