カニエが2枚目のスランプにつきあたることを期待していたアンチ・カニエ派には、残念な1枚。『Late Registration』は去年の『College Dropout』の斬新さを再生することはできないが、はるかに手間暇をかけて熟成させたアルバムである。歌詞の面ではカニエはわずかしか進歩していないが、音楽的には、本作では極上の音を出している。特に、共同プロデューサーのジョン・ブライオンの参加で、楽曲の完成度に磨きがかかっている。マルーン5のアダム・レヴィーンをフィーチャーした「Heard 'Em Say」そして「Hey Mama」はソウルフルで豊かな質感をたたえているし、火花が散るようなエッジのある「Crack Music」、キャムロンをフィーチャーした「Gone」はストリート志向のリスナーにアピールしそうだ。駄作も数曲ある。ブランディをフィーチャーした粘っこく甘ったるい「Bring Me Down」がその最たるものだが、アルバム自体の質は高い。とても、とても高い。要するに、カニエを中傷する人にとっては、彼の魅力に対する抵抗が揺らぐことはないだろうが、1作目からの支持者ならば報われるだけでなく、新しいファンを獲得できるじゅうぶんな魅力が、『Late Registration』にはある。

＊ボーナストラックについて

19曲目までがオリジナルで、20~21がこの盤でのボーナストラックとなります。
国内期間限定盤は、20曲目までが同様で、21「We Can Make It Better」、22「Back To Basics」という構成になっています。
それより500円ほど高い国内通常盤は、それに更に「Late」を追加した23曲入りです。

「Diamonds~」は先行カットとなった13のオリジナル・バージョンで、Jay-Z抜きです。
トラックも大きく変わってはいませんが、異なるMixとなっています。
「Late」は、スケール感のある（アルバムに入れなかったのが不思議な）クオリティの高い曲だと思います。

この盤には収録されていない２曲にもコメントしておくと、
「We Can Make It Better」はどちらかと言うと1stアルバムに近い雰囲気を持つトラックの上で、
Talib Kweli, Q-Tip, Common & Rhymefestという豪華なメンツをFeaturingしています。
「Back To Basics」はCommonの「The Corner」のトラックを逆回しした小品です。Common「Be」を持っていればあまりお得感は感じません。

更にUS盤には「Diamond~」のPVやインタビュー映像などを収録したDVD付限定盤があります。熱心なファンの方はそちらを。

ギャングスタとは無縁ながらリアル・ヒップホップを体現出来る数少ないアーティスト，カニエ・ウェスト。本作では模倣者が出回ったために早回しサンプリングは封印した格好だが，それでも前作以上にアイディア満載の秀作に仕上がっている。
マルーン５のアダム・レヴィンを起用し，ナタリー・コールをサンプリングした「Heard ‘Em Say」は，パラダイス気分の心地良いミッドテンポ。「Touch The Sky」はカーティス・メイフィールド「Move On Up」をサンプリングしたファンキーなアップテンポ。ホーンセクションのループがスタイリッシュで心憎い演出。この辺がギャングスタ派からは「ミーハーな大ネタ使い」と陰口をたたかれる所以。それでも我が道を進むのがカニエ流。
特に中盤以降は佳曲が目白押し。ハードボイルド映画を思わせるニヒルなサックスが渋い「Drive Slow」，コモンが参加したスリリングなメロディーの小曲「My Way Home」，ストリングスにホーンセクション，聖歌隊まで起用した映画音楽風の荘厳なバラード「Crack Music」。ビル・ウィザーズをサンプリングした「Roses」に，ブランディが参加した「Bring Me Down」は美しくも悲しいメロディーが印象的。さらにアコースティック・ジャズ風のクールな「Addiction」，ロック・シンフォニー風の「Diamonds」，Ｅ．Ｗ＆Ｆのようにホーンセクションを前面に押し出したゴージャスで明るい雰囲気の「We Major」，タイトルどおりハッピーなバラード「Celebration」と，駄曲は一曲もない完璧な出来。
幅広いジャンルから選曲した贅沢なサンプリングと独創的なアイディアに，ジャンル不問の豪華なゲスト陣。これは一大エンターテイメントである。

先行シングルDiamonds From Sierra LeoneのオリジナルはビルボードHot100で最高43位、今回収録されるそのRemixにはJay-Zが参加。続く2ndシングルGold Diggerにはオスカー俳優、Kanyeや50 Centが参加しているNEWアルバムも楽しみなJamie Foxxが参加。すでにHot R&B/HIPHOPでは10位、Hot100でも急上昇中。まだ決定してないけど収録曲にはNasが参加した曲もあったので、もし入ればScarfaceの『The Fix』みたいにJay-ZとNasが1つのアルバムに入るってことで楽しみ。
