個々の演奏者の音楽人生の中で最高の一瞬を捉えた貴重な記念すべき1964録音のアルバム。バラードの緊張感と倍テンになってからの爆発。スタンダードナンバーがここまで崇高になるのかという驚愕的な傑作。シンプルなDrmセットによる天才アンソニーの驚異的なドラミング、コンテンポラリージャズピアノの正に手本になるハンコックのコードワーク＆凝縮されたソロ、変幻自在のリズム隊、沈黙が音楽になっているＭデビス、そしてひたすら真面目なフレージングのＧコールマン。このメンバーが織り成す素晴らしいバランス。ＢＧＭで流すには目的が違うアルバム。ステラの1分55秒に出て来る観客の「Yeah〜！」もこの音楽の一部になっている。このジャズ史上最高の傑作はマイルス自伝によると、慈善コンサートの為出演者はノーギャラで、出演前にあるメンバーの１人とひと悶着あったという。同じメンバーによる「マイルス・イン・ヨーロッパ」とは違う緊張感があるのはそのためか。そういう意味でも生身の人間の“ジャズらしい”アルバム。

フィルハーモニック・ホールでのライヴ盤。同じステージを収録した『フォア&モア』が“動”、本作が“静”と言われるようですが、１曲目のマイ・ファニー・ヴァレンタインを聴けば分かるように、曲は”静”ですが、マイルスのトランペットはこれでもかと言わんばかりに、絶頂へ突っ走ります。そこからややおちついたオール・ブルース、アイ・ソート・アバウト・ユーが情緒あふれるマイルスのソロの聴き所でしょうか。あと、テナーサックスのジョージ・コールマンのソロも燻銀の渋さで大海をゆうゆうと泳いでるかのようです。

1962年2月12日、ニューヨーク、リンカーン・センターのフィルハーモニック･ホールにてライヴ録音。この後、5ヶ月後1964年7月、日本で行われた『世界ジョズ・フェスティバル』において日本のファンはマイルス・デイビス･クインテットを初めて生で聴くことになる。『Four & More』も同日の演奏として知られている。

このアルバムは、ジョージ・コールマンに対する不満が常にマイルスの頭の片隅にあるように思える。やはり、ジョン・コルトレーンの後をやるというのは大変なことだ。代わりなどいるわけがない。マイルスは常にメンバーに言い続けた。『常に新しい方法で表現しろ。』これをこなし続けられる面子しか彼のバンドには残れない。

逆に言うと残りの3人のプレイは合格点だったことが分かる。ロン・カーターは27才、ハービー・ハンコックは24才、ドラムのトニー・ウイリアムスはなんと18才だった。怪物たちの誕生の瞬間を聴くようなアルバムである。
