６０年代フリーブロウイング時代初期のライブですが、この時期の驚異的アップテンポに至る前の、快適ドライブのような演奏です。
いきなりフルスロットルぶっ飛ばしの「フォア　アンド　モア」を聴くと返り討ちに遭いますが、このアルバムはホットでありながら気楽に聴ける演奏だと思います。
ここでの「枯葉」で聴かれるマイルスの絶妙のニュアンスは感涙ものです

　歴代クィンテットの最高のステージですね。ショーターが加入してどんどん「早く」なる前の落ち着いた演奏は個人的には好きですね。１曲の演奏時間も長くてＪＡＺＺを満喫できますね。「枯葉」もいいけど「I Thought About You」も最高。特にハービーハンコック！もう素晴らしいピアノじゃないですか！

1963年7月27日、フランスのジャズ祭にてのライヴ録音。パーソナルはマイルス・デイビス(tp)、ハービィー・ハンコック(p)、ロン・カーター(b)、トニー・ウイリアムス(ds)にジョージ・コールマン(ts)である。この1年後の『マイルス・イン・ベルリン』は、1964年9月25日、ベルリン・ジャズ・フェスティバルの行われたベルリン・フィルハーモニック・ホールでライヴ録音で、ウェイン・ショーターが初めて参加したアルバムであることで有名だ。ウェイン・ショーターは1964年9月15日からマイルスのバンドに参加し、1970年2月17日にマイルスのバンドから離れている。彼の参加で所謂60年代のマイルス・クインテットは完成をみる。ウェインはこの時31才、ロン・カーターは27才、ハービー・ハンコックは24才、ドラムのトニー・ウイリアムスはなんと18才だった。

逆に言うとこのアルバムは、ジョージ・コールマンに対する不満が常にマイルスの頭の片隅にあるように思える。やはり、ジョン・コルトレーンの後をやるというのは大変なことだ。代わりなどいるわけがない。マイルスは常にメンバーに言い続けた。『常に新しい方法で表現しろ。』これをこなし続けられる面子しか彼のバンドには残れない。逆に言うと残りの3人のプレイは合格点だったことが分かる。怪物たちの誕生の瞬間を聴くようなアルバムである。
