Ｔｈｅ Ｂｏｏｍが「島唄」でブレイクする以前の１９８９年末に出した盤なのに、いまだ現役盤だったのはラッキーでした。

トラック９「なし」を偶然街角で耳にしたのが１９９４年頃ですが、先日やっとタイトル・歌手・収録盤が判明したのでさっそく買ったものです。

「なし」は「この梨食べて元気出せ」のフレーズだけがずっと焼きついていましたが、入手してちゃんと聴くと、映画「太陽がいっぱい」に少し似たシチュエーションで友人に嫉妬・殺意を抱いている男のところへ、その相手に「このなし食べて元気出せ」と訪ねてこられて毒気を抜かれるというシチュエーションを歌った曲で、何とも共感(？)をそそる内容です。

Ｔｈｅ Ｂｏｏｍにはこれまで応援歌っぽいイメージを抱いていましたが、初期にはこんな屈折した曲も歌っていたとは新発見でした。

発売当初、自分は高校生だった。通学のバスの中で後ろの知らない女子高生二人が音楽について語っていた。「ザ・ブームというバンドのサイレンのおひさまというアルバムがすごく良くて泣いてしまった」
当時の自分はバンド＝ロック＝激しい。といった単純な物だったので、泣けるバンドとは何ぞや？と妙に気にかかり、ＣＤレンタルで借りて聴いてみた。
ムム・・ぐっと来る。全て良いが「ダーリン」「晩年-サヨナラの歌」「気球に乗って」が個人的にクル。弾けないギターを弾く真似をしながら熱唱した。なんていうか自意識過剰な十代には特別たまらなかったのだ。
その後ＣＤを買いなおし、今でもたまに引っぱり出して聴いては自意識過剰な三十代は涙する訳だが・・
個人的には本作がブームの最高傑作。

今の沖縄音楽やブラジル音楽の入る前の
スカバンドのザ・ブームが聴ける１枚。

一見、ほのぼのとした音楽と歌詞のような雰囲気を
醸し出しつつも、童謡のように歌詞が怖くて
ブラックユーモアが小気味いいのが、初期のブームの
特徴のひとつです。

「気球に乗って」は、中国・天安門事件を歌っており、
この当時から密かなる社会派のザ・ブームが垣間見えます。
