ブラジル北東部(ノルデスチ)の沿岸都市レシーフェで開催されたイベントで出会ったミュージシャンの中、久保田麻琴がセレクト、コンパイルした編集盤。サンバ、ボサ・ノヴァに通じる洗練された楽曲もあるが、大半は北東部の伝統的音楽と現代感覚がミックスされたもので、生命力あふれる野性的な魅力をたたえている。また、かつての宗主国ポルトガルを媒介に伝播したアラブやアフリカ、トラッド風の旋律を持つ曲も収録。よくあるボサ・ノヴァ中心の編集盤とは一味違う、ブラジル音楽の奥深さを再認識させる好企画盤となっている。 (飯塚達弘) --- 2005年08月号

すごい一枚です。これくらいグサッとくるのは年に何枚もないでしょう。最初から終わりまで、１曲としてつまらないのがない、選び抜かれたコンピレーション。さすがは音の旅人、久保田麻琴。（ところで昔から思ってたんですが、「麻琴」って本名なんでしょうか？　麻のお琴ですか？　すごすぎ、飛びすぎ。）選ばれた音の母体はブラジル北東部、ブラジルの中でもド田舎の名に恥じない地方です。映画「セントラル・ステーション」での、トラックで旅する巡礼のシーンを思い出してください。あの乾燥した荒野。そしてアフリカ大陸にもっとも近い海岸。それぞれに独自の伝統があり、進化があり、爆発があります。いったいどんな文化のどんな音を組み合わせれば、こんな風になっていくのか？　西アフリカ、インディオ、ヨーロッパ、アラブ。すべてが渾然一体となっています。このグルーヴは、他のどこでもありえないでしょう。まさに地球音楽の最先進地帯！　おもしろいのはポルトガル語の発音のちがい。リオなら「のいち」、現代リスボンなら「のいとぅ」となる「夜」が、ここでははっきり「のいてぃ」と発音されている。昔のポルトガルの発音が、たぶんいちばんよく残っているのでしょう。ここに収録されたアーティストたちそれぞれのアルバムが、ぜんぶ欲しくなりました。
