ワーグナーで観たのは2作品目。ワグネリアンに男性が多いのは、それなりに訳がありそうですが、この作品は、イタリアオペラ好きの女性でも比較的楽しめるのではないかと思います。（楽しいといっても、喜劇ではありませんが・・）

クプファーの演出は野田秀樹や蜷川幸雄の作品を好む私としては、中々大胆かつ美しくかなり好きなものです。特に、神の手かサタンの手を思わせる船の形が印象的。

歌手もほとんどのソリストがレベルが高く、気持ちよく聴けます。
特に、オランダ人役のサイモン・エステスは、その筋肉がセクシーで、伸びやかな声と共に、役柄の印象を付けられます。

それに対する、病的な情熱のゼンダ／リスベート・バルスレフも、ほぼ、出ずっぱりの舞台を中だるみ無く演じており、よい出来です。

いきなり、上演時間が比較的長いワーグナー作品を観るのは、初心者には大変なので、この130分程度の作品から入ってみてはいかがでしょう？

クプファーのバイロイトデビューとなった演出として知られ、バイロイト史上に残る「オランダ人」の名演。　”パラノイア化した主人公ゼンタの暴走”といういわゆる読み替え演出を持ち込み、サイコスリラーばりの雰囲気でゼンタが妄想の頂点で飛び降り自殺で他界するというもの。序曲から終幕まで、その奇怪な世界を１３０分もの間、観る者を釘付けにする手腕には脱帽。ライナーノーツにも書かれているが、演出上の場面転換は１２回にも及ぶという凄まじさ。バルスレフは肖像画を抱えたまま、一秒たりとも舞台から引っ込むことはなく、彼女のリアル感に富んだ病みきった表情と、「あら〜こいつ、完全にイっちゃっているよ」とビビる周囲の人々との一体感は素晴らしい。当方も観ていて思わず「もう、さっさと病院に連れて行けよ〜」と突っ込みを入れたくなったくらいだ（笑）。クプファーお得意の高低、前後の空間を縦横無尽に駆使した小細工も次から次に登場する。ネルソンの指揮は細部の詰めは甘いが、燃焼度は高く、スリリング溢れる演出にマッチしている。エステスやバルスレフの歌唱は手放しで賛美できない部分があるが、演出の凄さを前にそんなことどうでも良くなる。
