一聴して、ベン･ワット唯一の1stソロ「ノース・マリン・ドライヴ」を彷彿させられたリスナーは数多くいるだろう。と書くと、二番煎じなのかと思われるかもしれないが、そんなことを言いたいわけではなくて、あの冬の冷たい空気感を、ボサ･ノヴァやニューウェイヴを取り込みながら表現し遂げることは、絶対に人真似ではできないことなのだ。だから懐かしさというより、まさかこの感覚を別のアーティストで感じ取れることがあるとはという驚きのが強い。しかも２０００年以降のデジタルですら厚みを持たせることの時代に、これだけ簡素で、まるで水墨画のような朴訥さを表現できるなんて、まさに奇跡的じゃないだろうか。

久し振りに、じっくり何度聴いて、その音楽世界に沈み込めるアーティストに出会えた気がする。雑多な音楽を取り込んでいながら、出される音楽はあくまでもシンプルで、研ぎ澄まされている。この辺は、同じフォーキーな新しい音でも、デヴェンドラ・バンハートとは趣がかなり違っている。どちらも好きではあるんだが。

これ、いいです。
ジャンル分けするのは難しいですが。
雨の日に聞くとすごくいいです。
雨の日とか、夜の静かなドライブとか。
全体的に静寂な感じの
ギターとボーカルが際立つ
シンプルな音楽です。
ただ、惜しむらくは収録時間が30分ほど・・・。
もっと聞きたかった！

蛇足ですが、VENEERはベニア板のベニアだそうで、
その他に「空虚な」という意味もあるそうです。

どちらかといえばそういう「空虚感」「虚脱感」
「脱力感」が感じられるアルバムです。

今年のSUMMER SONICのビーチステージで見て、即購入しました。
青空の下、ビール片手に海風に吹かれながら聴いたのですが、身震いするほど気持ちよかったです。

お客が少ないにも関わらず、あんなに素晴らしいパフォーマンスを披露して
くれて感謝！

音楽的にはアシッドフォークという程の派手さはないし、確かに
既存の音楽からは全て微妙に外れた位置にある音だと思います。

使い捨て、聴き捨てではなく愛着を持って何十年後も間違いなく聴いていると思うので
コストパフォーマンスは抜群だと思います（笑
買って損はないですよ。
