NPG名義ですが、ジャケット通り実質プリンスの作品(1998年)。NPGのメンバーはほとんど表に出てきません(笑)。
プリンスのキャリア中(2007年時点)、最も黒人寄りのサウンドで、全編ファンク。パーラメントをプリンス的ミニマルに変換したような音になっています。これまでのように様々なスタイルを折衷せず、ファンクで統一しているのは珍しいと思います。多様だった「Emancipation」からの揺り戻しでしょうか。
バンド的な雰囲気が薄く(個人的に打ち込み系の音のような気が…)、どこをどう切ってもプリンス節。ますますNPG名義の意味が全然わかりませんが、強いて言えば歌詞がダークかつ18禁路線であることが原因かも。Prince(シンボル)名義では健全に、それ以外ではお下劣全開(笑)、と使い分けをしようとしていたのでしょうか。21世紀以降の「Fワード禁止宣言」の前兆?
全曲かっこいいのですが、個人的には"The Most Beautiful〜"に"The Arms of Orion"のようなクレア･フィッシャーのゴージャスなストリングを合わせたTr.3がエクセレント!!! なぜコレにこのバラードが入っているのか??? そういう謎(天然?)なところもプリンスらしいです。
シークレットトラックは死産についての悲しい曲(涙)。単なるサイドプロジェクトと片付けられない、意外なターニングポイントになっている重要作かもしれません。
何気に「Chaos and Disorder」とは対になっている作風と思います。

リリース当時ネットワークの普及とそのアート性の高さでインデペンデントの星になられた彼です。<1>で高らかにテーマが宣言されます。
<4>は名無しになられた彼がプリンスを演じるような妙味のある良い曲です。ポップな骨組みと味付けのクセの強さが良いバランスです。
プリンスであればキーボードであっただろうパートがホーンに替わられ、終盤にホーンを従えラップを披露する彼はすこぶる自由です。
<7>などはGテイスト(DRE等が作るパーラメント・ファンカデリックを下敷きにしたトラック)を感じさせるキーボードが時代との邂逅を
感じさせますが、こちらはシーケンサー無し・本物のホーンセクションと贅沢になっており甲高い彼の声よりジョージの野太いシャウト
が乗って欲しい程の出来です。完全に好きな人向けもしくは彼がパーラファンカが好きなのでしょう。<10>でまた一流のキレを見せつけ
ます。タイトに絞ったスネアに気持ちいいとしか言えないカッティングに要所で少しだけ顔を出すホーン等、トラックに残すパーツの
チョイスに高度の洗練を見せます。スローな曲(隠しトラックを含む)はパーソナルな内容が多く、この事からも彼は完全にアンダーグラウンド
・スーパースターであられる事が判ります。アートワークは素晴らしく趣味性を強めた彼のコンセプトが的確に表現されています。

パレードで止まっている、うちのにーちゃんがいいました。「プリンスかい？ロックなジャケだね。」そうです。NPG名義ですが、FUNKな殿下です。すべての作品、ジャケはイケてる殿下ですが、このジャケはかなりイケ面です。内容もFunkyで良いです。非常にこってます。いつもの通り鼻歌でつくったとは思えません。何度も聴くと本当に良いです。手軽に手に入る良質のPOPなFUNKを聴きたい方にオススメします。やっぱPOPSの天才。
