まずはじめに「フィリピンで日本の捕虜となった従軍看護婦１０４人に捧げる。その勇気在る体験をもとにした物語」と説明が出る。そして査問委員会の場面へ。元陸軍看護婦ジェサップ大佐（スーザン・サランドン）が彼女たちの勇気を軍に認めるよう冒頭陳述を行う。アメリカでは戦時下における勇気「VALOR」というものに特別な思いがあるらしい。
日本軍捕虜収容所を舞台にしたアメリカ作品はいろいろある。今回は「女性たち」に目を向けたという一点が見所。その意味で原題「WOMEN OF VALOR」のままの方が、正しい内容を伝えられたのではないか。ストーリーそのものにはインパクトなし。スーザン・サランドンの熱演は認めるが、虚しい空振りだった。

そしてあえて一言。外人エキストラの日本語らしからぬ日本語には大いに違和感あり。サムライとかハラキリとかオジギとか、日本人に持つありきたりのイメージは大いに鼻についた。作品にのめりこめなかった一番の理由。
