Stand-out tracks on Lyceum include 'It's Only Obvious', the punk rock rush of Caveman and the minor chord gen 'Blue Light'. Among the pick of the 12 bonus cuts are 'Tiny Words', 'Yawn' and the anti-Poll Tax protest song 'Defy The Law'. Also included are both sides of the rare singles released on Bob Stanley's Caff label. １０インチのアナログ盤だったアルバムに初期のシングルを
追加した彼らのネオアコ期最高傑作集。「HOLD　ON」などは
胸が締め付けられる隠れた名曲だと思います。
サラ・レーベルで一纏めに語られがちですが英国ネオアコ・シーンでも
もっと評価されてもよいバンドだと思います。

Sarahレーベルの一定のイメージというのがあって、The Orchidsもその中にハマるバンド。線の細いダイレクトなギター、時々3度が続くような少し気弱なベースライン、不安定な(それが良いのだけれど)ヴォーカル。インディーの優等生。

It's Only Obvious、Obviousというのはこの頃のギターポップのキーワードなのかどうか。ポストパンクとか(その頃そんな風に言われていたかどうかは分からないけれど)曖昧としたくくられ方に対してはObviousはある種のメッセージを感じなくもないか。

そのIt's Only Obviousはドラムがタイトな8ビート。I⇒I/IIIm⇒IIm⇒IV。なんとも煮え切らないコード進行がその後に続く美しいサビまでを堅実につなぐ。SEを入れていたり、少しlo-fiなガレージバンド風のドラムだったり、芯の強さをもったCaveman。どの曲も飾らないアコースティックギターがとても気持ちいい。
