パク・チャヌク監督の演出、ソン・ガンホの演技に惹かれ、映画館に足を運んだ。口が利けず耳も聞こえないリュ（シン・ハギュン）、優しい姉、革命を夢見るヨンミ（ペ・ドゥナ）。ソン・ガンホに引けをとらない演技者の揃い踏み。自分の腎臓によって姉を救いたいと思いながら、不適合ゆえに叶わない。それならば、臓器売買をと、工場を解雇されて手にした１００万ウォンと自分の腎臓を提供するが、だましとられてしまう。八方塞がりのリュをヨンミがそそのかし、誘拐を決行。最愛の娘を誘拐されたドンジン（ソン・ガンホ）。仕事一筋に生きてきた彼は、妻に去られ、今や娘のために生きていると言っても言いすぎではなかった。なぜ、自分が！なぜ自分の娘が！この世には理不尽なことがあふれている。リュの姉は自殺。ドンジンの娘は事故により溺死。こうしてそれぞれの復讐は始まった。『甘い人生』にはプロットに無理があり、映画の中に入り込めない。『オールドボーイ』はあまりの恐怖に２度は観られない。この映画は、復讐と暴力の連鎖が何も生みはしないことを教えている。台詞のないリュの、宙をさまよう視線が忘れられない。

『オールド・ボーイ』『親切なクムジャさん』と続く復讐三部作の第一作目。
他の二作に比べ、最も「観ていて気分の悪い」映画。『オールド・ボーイ』にある劇画調のアクションシーンや、『クムジャさん』にあるユーモアのような、観客を息抜きさせるポイントがほとんどない。
徹頭徹尾、陰惨な復讐劇が展開され、残酷な暴力描写と、誰を責めてよいのかもわからない出口のない展開に、観客は翻弄されるばかり。
だからこそ、他の２作ほど世界中で愛される映画ではないが、全く手抜きのない重厚なリアリズムをたたえた復讐譚の傑作だと言ってよいでしょう。

そのあまりにも生生しい描写から韓国では散々酷評され続けてきた本作ではあるが、これが原点であることは間違いない。
大幅な減量、コメディー一切無しに娘を奪われ翻弄される父親を演じたソン・ガンホはもちろんだが、
シン・ハギュン,ペ・ドゥナのその演技はまさに壮絶,圧倒,圧巻。
"復讐者"の哀れさ 滑稽さ 愚かさをギリギリまで削られた言葉と説明で魅せた、復讐三部作 第一弾！
