1992年のデビューアルバムですが、これはカッコイイね。
自らブルーファンクと名づけた音楽性。ファンクのよう
であり、ロックであり、そしてブルーズでもある。不思
議な感覚です。
　ソウルが源流にあるものの、ナイジェリアの富豪出身
という高貴なものも音楽に流れているような気がする。

　いずれもファンキーなナンバーが収録されています。
　全曲一気に聴けるアルバムですね。基本的にはトリオ
編成のバンドですが、楽曲ごとにホーンが絡んできて素
晴らしい彩を添えているそんなアルバムです。

　カッコイイんだよねぇ~今聞いても。この人のギタープレイは殆ど
打楽器なので、実際彼のギター本体にえぐれた様な跡があります。自己
流の凄みを体験できるのが本作です。

それにしても、どうしてイギリス出身のブラックはこうも不思議な感性
に包まれているのだろう。SoulIISoulもそうだが、アメリカのブラック
の様な重たい感じがしなくて常にライトウェイトで軽やかな感じ。通し
てアルバムを聴いても疲れない。

レニークラヴィッツのライブで前座を担当していたこの人…大きな会場
が本当に似合わない（笑い）。渋谷のOnAirで単独ライブをやっていた
がそのサイズでもギリギリだな（笑）。いまだにロンドンの街中を、い
かしたハットを被りギターケース片手に普通に歩いていそうだ。あなた
はそれでいい…。

アフリカはナイジェリア出身のキザイア・ジョーンズの92年のデビュー作。これは実に衝撃的なアルバムだった。
70年首都ラゴスにて生まれる。父親はヨルバ族の族長で大企業を経営する有数の資産家。８歳で英才教育のためイギリスに送られるが、13〜14歳のときレイ・チャールズ、プリンスなどの音楽と出会いドロップ・アウト。ロンドンでのクラブ・サーキット、路上演奏を経て、キャピトルと契約、レコーディングするものの会社の企図と異なるものだったため契約解除。91年ヴァージン・フランス傘下のデラベル・レーベルと契約、レニー・クラヴィッツのヨーロッパ・ツアーのサポートをつとめ注目を集める。92年アルバム・デビュー。
「ブルー・ファンク」とはキザイア・ジョーンズ自身の造語でブルースとファンクの融合。「すべての源にブルースがあり、心のありようがファンクとなってほとばしり出る」と彼が語るままの音楽だ。しかし、アフリカ的なメロディ、打楽器的なギター奏法は、我々の耳になじんだアメリカのブルース、ファンクとは明らかに一味違う。
2ndはロック色が強くなるが、このアルバムはジャズとファンク寄りとなっていて、ジェイムス・ブラウンが登場しそうな曲もある。文才の無さもあるが、音を文章で説明することの限界を痛感させられるパーカッシブでプリミティブな音楽。結局これは聴かなきゃ分からない。
