クィーンやJ.レノンとのコラボ、M.ジャガーとのコラボ。取り分け、イメージの一新と"Let's Dance"('83年作)のヒットによってD.ボウイのイメージを作ってしまった小生としては、それこそ70s中期のグラムロックの雄としての彼のイメージも、更に遡ること60s末期〜70s初期にかけてのアーティスティックなフォークといった感触にも触れることなくここまで来てしまいました。
無論、D.ボウイのベストものは以前に聴いたことがあったのですが、やはり耳の行き場(?)は80sに近しい所が中心となり、今になって思えばベストをベストとして扱っていなかったような気がします(^^;
最近、反省と勉強(?)を兼ねてこの作品(オリジナルは'69年作。'72年にタイトルを変えて再リリース)に手を出してみました。先のベスト盤でも聴いてはいたのですが、当時のアポロ計画や2001年宇宙の旅といった宇宙に対する社会の熱い関心ではなく、それを裏から冷静に見据えたような第三者的な冷え冷えとした視点が見事に表現されている[1]は何度もReplayしております。
トータルアルバム/コンセプトアルバムと言うまでには首尾一貫したテーマは意識できないとは思いますが、[1]を始めとしてちょっと残酷なファンタジー、非常にうっすらとではありますが"狂気"のようなものを匂わせる歌詞に、D.ボウイの(曲作りの上での)美しさを見る思いがします。
ほぼ40年になろうかと言うミュージックシーンでの活動を通じて、病める時もそうでない時も、変わり続ける事を義務付けられた(または自身の強迫観念?)D.ボウイというアーティストのプリミティブを押えるにはやはり必要な作品かと思います。

アイドルのイメージでソロデビューしたボウイーが、何とあっさりと芸術家へ変貌した傑作。しかしながら風貌はまだアイドルだ。この時点ではサウンドだけが近未来的だったが、ビジュアル、演出など全ての面で時代を先行してゆくことになる。
