私は「Rio」を絶賛しているが、そちらは実は遡り聴きである。十代半ばの多感な時期に、たまたま、初めて臨んだ「洋楽」が、こちらのアルバムなのである。その音のあまりのすばらしさにショックを受けた。私は洋楽に恋をし、オリコンチャートを捨ててビルボードに鞍替えして毎週「全米トップ40」を聴くこととなる。

何がよかったのか。ビジュアルは当然のことであるが、音を消して見ても意味がない。何度も何度も聴きたくなるのは、やはり音がいいからだ。よく言われるように、スカスカしているのかもしれないが、センスがいいではないか。質が高いではないか。そして、何よりも、サイモン・ル・ボンが描く歌詞の摩訶不思議世界はどうだ。

何を歌っているのか、聴いてもわからない。調べても理解できない。英語がするすると入ってきても、意味がつかめないのだ。現実を忘れ、英語の迷路に入り込む。勝手な解釈をするしかない。そしておそらく、それこそがル・ボンのねらいなのだろう。「ご自由にどうぞ」。アメリカ人のハードロックのように単刀直入ではない。変化球だらけで目がまわる。

彼らの全米進出の模様をビデオで観た。女性達はめろめろになっている。彼女達は、同じ英語圏の人間である。でも、私は確信しているのだが、やっぱりサイモンが何を歌っているか飲み込めないんだろう。だから余計惹かれて仕方なく、倒れたりするのだ。このアルバムは暗くて内容がつかみづらいが、強力で抗えない磁力を持っている。

今回の東芝さんの名盤シリーズにはDURAN2の各アルバムが出そろっており嬉しい限りですネ！価格的にも本当に有り難いです。
個人的には洋楽を聴き始めた頃の懐かしさと音楽を聴く新鮮さを思い出させてくれる本作品がお気に入りです。１曲目のザ・リフレックスも某缶チューハイのCMで使用され、彼らもCMでのユニークな登場で話題になりました。
また、コピコンは残念ですが（☆0.5減らしたいぐらい）、本盤はパ○ース○ーションと違いしっかりリマスタリングされてもいますしね。
しかしこの値段なら、「セコい」ことせず購入し、ポリカーボネートや反射層の寿命が来るまで愛聴させていただきますよ、レコード会社さん！小細工はやめてください。
話がそれましたが、本作の当時モノLPを所有しており、この機に他の80sも聴き直していってみたいと思います。
これからはＬＰやカセットで所有する旧作品をリマスターCDで揃えていきたいですね。出来れば発表当時の解説と現在の解説、歌詞および対訳をしっかり付属しておいていただきたいです。それで百円、二百円は上がっても良いですから。ゼヒ、ゼヒ！！
