リーダーのボーカル、ギターのアンディパートリッジは、レコーディングにおいては、プロデューサー泣かせで全て自分の思い通りにしないと気のすまない人だったそうです。このアルバムではレコーディングスタッフと上手くいったようで、発表当時ことさらプロデューサーのスティーブリリーホワイトと、エンジニアのヒューパジャムによるゲートエコーと言われたドラムサウンドが強調されてましたが、デジタル技術によって、簡単にゲートエコーサウンドが出せるようになった現在でもやはり名盤たりているのは、そのドラムサウンドと同等以上に他の全ての楽器も充分に刺激的であることと、アンディの普遍的名曲を生み出せる才能の素晴らしさでしょう。冒頭曲「RespectableStreet」のビートルズ、キンクス直系のメロディラインとコーラスワーク、「NoLanguageInOurLungs」ではさりげない変拍子と、ビートルズ「アビーロード」に入っているある曲のギターフレーズもそのまま出てきます。ギターサウンドは'66~'68年あたりのキンクスにも似てます。そしてこの人ポップセンスと同時にアバンギャルドな側面も持ち合わせてます。分かりやすく言えば、詩人としても作曲家としても、「一人レノンマッカートニー」、あるいは、「わかりやすいザッパ」といったような人ですね。彼らの中でも最高の一枚に入ると思います。

いつだって、XTCの音楽はミュージシャン達の異質な教科書であった。
90年代中期のブリットポップムーブメントに影響を与えたり、
04年から始まったニューウェーブ・リヴァイバルにも影響を与えたり。
でも正直、本人達は全く売れなくて、商業的には成功していません。
実際、自分の周りでも聴いている人がいませんでした。
ひねくれポップがその原因だとは百も承知です。
しかし、その大衆に媚を売らない姿勢がまたカッコイイんですね。
このアルバムは、XTCのポスト・パンク期最後の作品です。
卓越したメロディにキューブリックなギターのアプローチ。
立体的な音楽を構築するバンドでかれらの右に出るバンドはいません。
ミュージシャンに愛され、尊敬され、参考にされるXTC。
これを機会に少し捻れたロックを聴いてみては？
