太平洋戦争末期、
四国愛媛県は松山に実在した海軍三四三航空隊の物語。

悪化する戦況、
奪われた制空圏の奪還のために
南方戦線から腕利きパイロットたちが松山に集められた。

映画前半は航空隊編成までの苦労談。
後半はB29、P38、F6Fの大襲来を迎え撃つ空中戦・・

沖縄水上特攻の大和を見送り、
4機は最後まで同行した秘話も紹介される。

「源田　実」と思しき海軍参謀が「千田」として三船敏郎が好演。

小隊長になる佐藤　允、夏木陽介、加山雄三の演技もいい。

部下の西村　晃、渥美　清もいい味を出している。

「太平洋の翼」というよりは「紫電改の翼」と言うべきか、

あるいは、やはり三四三航空隊を描いた
ちば　てつや作の人気漫画
「紫電改のタカ」の実写版のような映画である。

円谷英二の特撮も冴え、離陸シーンがいかにも(^_^;)・・の他は、
空中戦シーンなど米英合作の超大作で実物を使った
「空軍大戦略」にも
勝るとも劣らない出来である。

過日、愛媛県南レク公園の日本に唯一現存の「紫電改」を
見る機会があった。
「新品同様レストア」でなく、
墜落時の面影を残して曲がったプロペラ、欠損した尾翼など、
戦争の激しさ、痛み、悲しみが伝わってくるようであった。

日本を最後まで守った「紫電改」
この映画だけでなく、
こういった実物も見学をお勧めする。

零戦にかわる新型局地戦闘機「紫電改」で米軍機を迎撃して、制空権の奪還を試みる松山基地「３４３航空隊」の活躍を描く、１９６３年製作・「松林宗恵監督」の航空戦争映画。
【千田航空参謀（主演：三船敏郎）は松山基地に精鋭パイロットを集め、零戦に代わって登場した新鋭機「紫電改」で制空権の奪還を試みて、初陣を飾るが・・・・・・。】
紫電改の実物大が登場するが、ほかは模型による特撮場面も多い。特撮技術の印象が安っぽく感じるのは非常に残念！
特攻に反対する千田参謀の命令を無視して大和護衛のため沖縄へと出撃する安宅大尉（主演：夏木陽介）・帰還命令を無視して「Ｂ２９」の編隊めがけて出撃する滝大尉（主演：加山雄三）など、戦局の悪化に伴い敗戦の色濃い年代を背景にした物語のため悲愴感が漂う作品です。

本土防空戦での紫電改部隊の壮烈な活躍を描く。松林宗恵の演出もドラマ
構成もしっかりしているが、円谷英二の特撮も見物。戦艦大和と最後の護衛
をする紫電改との邂逅も空戦シーンも特撮史上に残る。公開当時はこちらの
方が話題になったが、紫電改部隊の離陸シーンもかなり丁寧に作り込まれた
特撮シーンである。３人の大尉（加山雄三、佐藤允、夏木陽介）のキャラ
クターも、また脇役の渥美清や西村晃の熱演も忘れ難い。東宝の数ある
空戦映画の中でも名作である。
