いきなりハードなドライヴで始まる「ミーン・ストリート」で幕をあけ、自在にそして、骨太にロックする、まさにアメリカのハード・ロック・バンドとしての展望を開いた作品。エディーのギターもさらに切れ味を増して全開に駆け巡る！！

【プロフィール】
1974年に米国ロサンゼルスで結成。オリジナル・メンバーはデヴィッド・リー・ロス(vo)、エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレン(g)、マイケル・アンソニー(b)、アレックス・ヴァン・ヘイレン(ds)。78年にアルバム『炎の導火線』でデビュー。エディのテクニカルで超絶的なギターとデヴィッドのパワフルなヴォーカル、派手なアクションで人気を集め、83年発表の6作目『1984』と初の全米ナンバー・ワンとなったシングル「ジャンプ」の大ヒットで頂点に立つ。86年にデイヴが脱退してソロ活動を始めたため、後任のヴォーカリストに元モントローズのサミー・ヘイガーが加入、アメリカを代表する正統的ハード・ロック・バンドへと成長する。サミーの脱退後、98年に元エクストリームのゲイリー・シェローンが参加、『ヴァン・ヘイレンIII』を発表するが、ゲイリーは脱退。エディの病気治療のため活動停止していたが、サミーが復帰、2004年に全米ツアーを行ない、活動を再開している。

個人的にはヴァン・ヘイレンの最高傑作。「Mean Street」も「Hear About It Later」も「Unchained」もあまりにもかっこ良過ぎる。このアルバムにはコマーシャルな部分がなく、ただひたすらへヴィでハードでエキサイティングなサウンドを聴かせてくれる。だがしかし欧州系の様式美とは違いアメリカならではの大陸的でダイナミックなサウンドでありながら、どこか歪んだ部分がこのアルバムには充満していてまさにへヴィ＆ハードロックの真髄といえる。この正確にポップな味付けを排除した徹底的にヘヴィなサウンドはこのアルバムの特徴であり、大きな魅力といえるだろう。それにしても誰も「Hear About It Later」を評価しないのはなぜだろう。リフも展開も非常にかっこよく美しい。エディのギターソロもドラマチックでキマリすぎている。

かねてより評価が分かれる作品。私はEDDIEの音が恐らく最も歪んでいる頃で、ライドハンド(今はタッピングっていうのかな？)、ナイロン弦でのセカンドのインスト等、ややインパクトに欠ける新奏法に陰りが出てきたかと思われた矢先、1曲目イントロでみんなビックリ！新たな飛び道具でこれまで本人以上に効果的な使い方が出来ている人は20年以上経った今でもいないのではないでしょうか。
全体的にややアメリカ的な砕けた雰囲気はなく、真摯に濃密に音を追求している、ある意味でファーストに近い、もっとハードですが様式美チックな印象を受ける作品です。ただ、これまでにない曲調のものも多く、3〜6曲目なんかは未だライヴでもやることがあるし、ファンも多い曲ではないでしょうか。他の方のレヴューにもありましたが、私も『HEAR ABOUT IT LATER』は大好きな曲で、アメリカのツアーでは定番のようですがこれはキーボードレス時代のものとしてはもっと評価されてもいいドラマチックな曲だと思います。
ややコアなファン向けのイメージもあるかもしれませんが、トリビュート盤でも相応に取り上げられる曲も多く、特にギタリスト諸君にはセンスのよいバッキング、つなぎフレーズも含めてコピーも実は相当辛い(全作そうではありますが)質のよい好盤ではないかと思います。個人的にはセカンドの次によく回す作品です！

アグレッシブ＆メロウ見事にマッチしたすばらしいできばえです。
