イタリア弦楽四重奏団のしなやかで明るい音色と流麗な表現が面目躍如たる演奏。ハイドンが弦楽四重奏曲において試みた喜遊性と芸術性の統合が彼らの演奏によって理想的に実現されている。例えば『五度』のような短調で書かれた曲でもその表現の明るさは際立っているし、自然体で屈託の無いカンタービレが独特の軽やかさで聴き手に幸福感をもたらしてくれる。また『ひばり』では澄み切った青空を髣髴とさせるすがすがしい透明感が印象的だ。彼らは１９４５年結成以来１９８０年の解散までモーツァルト、ベートーヴェンそしてブラームスの弦楽四重奏曲全曲録音を中心に数多くの名演奏を残したが、取り組む曲に対する柔軟なアプローチと鍛え上げられたアンサンブル、そして開放感と歌心に溢れた表現が彼らの信条と言える。この曲集では第２楽章でことのほか美しいヴァリエーションが繰り広げられる『皇帝』と更に偽作の『セレナード』(ホフシュテッター作曲)を含めた４曲が収められている。ちなみに『皇帝』のみが１９７６年でその他は１９６５年の録音だが音質は瑞々しく極めて良好。

ハイドンの弦楽四重奏曲の中で知名度の高い４曲のセット。
録音は＜ひばり＞＜セレナード＞＜五度＞が1965年、＜皇帝＞が1976年なのでアナログ録音であるが、音質はアナログにしてはかなり良い。
演奏するイタリア四重奏団は明るい音色が持ち味なのでハイドンのこれらの曲とは相性がよく、温雅な演奏を聴かせてくれる。

　ハイドンの弦楽四重奏の最もポピュラーな4曲をまとめたディスクです。入門として最適であるだけでなく、イタリア弦楽四重奏団の名演としても屈指のものといえるのではないでしょうか。特に、第76番ニ短調《五度》の第1楽章はすばらしく、感動して不覚にも涙しそうになる時があります。小林秀雄が『モオツァルト』で「かなしさは疾走する。涙は追いつけない。」と表現したモーツァルトの傑作といわれる弦楽五重奏曲第4番ト短調の第1楽章と通じるものを感じます。こちらの演奏で気に入っているスメタナ四重奏団の演奏（モーツァルト:弦楽五重奏曲第3番・第4番）と同様に、Quartetto Italianoの《五度》の演奏は伸びやかな明るさのある演奏によってかなしさが一層染みわたる感じがします。万人必携の一枚だと思います。
　なお第17番は第2楽章が「ハイドンのセレナード」として広く親しまれていますが、17番全体がハイドンの真作でなく彼を信奉したホーフシュテッターの作とされ、最近では全集に含められなくなっている（http://www.lib.kunitachi.ac.jp/tenji/2009/tenji0906.pdf）と聞きます。また、第2楽章だけアンコール曲として演奏され、全曲録音も少なくなっているとのことです。ハイドン作でなくても紛れもない名曲であるこの作品をイタリア弦楽四重奏団の名演で聴くことができるディスクとしても貴重だと言えます。
