　わたしは、このCDに記録されたベートーヴェンの演奏を聞くと、映画などで描かれる古代ローマの元老院の風景を連想してしまう。

　比類なく美しい音。他の解釈などありえないと信じ切れてしまう説得力。聴き終えてどしりと胸に残る響き。

　一度でいいから、こんな演奏を生で聴いてみたいものだ。

　ベートーヴェンの完成した唯一のヴァイオリン協奏曲は古今東西並ぶもののない偉大な曲である。その美しさ、崇高さ、雄大さはまさにヴァイオリン協奏曲の王者にふさわしい風格を備えている。この曲をヨアヒムが復活させてから幾度となく演奏されてきたが、この曲の価値に値する演奏がどれだけあったかは定かではない。現在もヴァイオリニストの重要なレパートリーとなっているが、果たして満足できる演奏があるだろうか。シェリング二度目のこの録音は私にとっては素晴らしい演奏であると思う。過度な表情はさけて作品をありのままに表現しようとする態度が見受けられる。第一楽章の雄大で、崇高な表現、下属調にあたる第二楽章の安らぎ、清潔に満ちた表現、第三楽章の華やかさ、どれも満足のいくものである。人によってはおとなしすぎるつまらない演奏と感じる方もいるかもしれないが、この協奏曲には演奏者の誇示は必要ないのである。なぜなら、この曲にはそのようなつまらない議論を遥かに超えた包容力が備わっているからである。

最近では鄭京和のディスクが定盤と言えるのだろうが、シェリングのベートーヴェンは最も真摯、求道的でありながら、この曲の可憐な初恋の思いを吐露したような調べに相応しい。「ドイツ的」などというものが、いかなる事態、状態をさすのかよくわからないが、ドイツの正統派ヴァイオリニストとされるシェリングの誠実さはときにいじらしいほどだ。吉田秀和は、ベートーヴェンが一つの主題を繰り返すようにスコアに書き込んでいる場合は、それをそのまま受け入れ、なぜもう一度なのか熟考する必要があるという旨のコメントを残していたが、このヴァイオリン・コンチェルトでも、第一主題のテーマが再現する部分、その言葉をかみ締めながら聴くことになる。何という美しい音楽だろうか。
それはシェリング盤だからこそ。ヴィルトゥオジティにはおよそ無縁な無私の音楽である。その点では、鄭の演奏も一目置くことになろう。
