オビを見て食いついた方、大正解。
北欧テクニカル・メロディック・メタル。
これほど理想的で誘惑的なキャッチフレーズは逆に怪しいだろうと思ったら、いや大間違い。
店の音質の悪い試聴機でちょっと聴いてみても、わかるはず。
KAMELOTのロイカーンを想起させるメロウVO。北欧感溢れるメロディ。どこまでも聞き苦しくなく安定した実力系ギター。絶妙に散りばめられたプログレ色。
全く期待を裏切らないその完成度は、このCIRCUSMAXIMUSが、DREAMTHEATERに次ぐプログレメタルバンドの代表格として世界を圧巻させることを容易に予想させるほどである。
これが本当にデビュー作なのか！？

　ついジャケ買いをしたのだが、聴いてびっくり、完成度が高くそして棄てる曲がなく各パートのテクニックも申し分ない。しかも一枚目のアルバムの新人にびっくり。さらに400万人の人口しかいないノルウェーのバンドで、もうひとつおまけにびっくり。ＤＴの影響は所々に聴こえるのだけれども、気にはならないほどの楽曲の良さ。特に歌メロとコーラスワーク、そして期待をはずさないギターソロ(新人とは思えないツボの押さえ方)はプログレメタルを敬遠している人も惹かれると思う。全体を通して感じられるのは冷涼な透明感。イギリスほどの湿り気はないしアメリカほどのからっとしたところもない。曲調はこそ違うが、ラッシュと同じような空気を感じるのは自分だけだろうか。カナダもそういえば寒い国だし(笑)。とにかく二枚目の期待が大きいバンドには違いない。

欧米で2005年にリリースされたデビュー作を新たにリマスターしてボーナス･トラックも加えての日本盤。

デビュー作として考えた場合、この卓越した演奏と北欧的なメロディ、透明感を感じさせるサウンド・プロダクションのバランスは強烈なインパクトを与える。

冷静に聴き込むと楽曲の出来具合には、まとまりのなさも感じさせるけど、それでも「凄い」と思わせる力がある作品だ。2作目の"Isolate"を気に入ったリスナーなら、聴いて損はしないと思う。

ボーナス曲9は序盤、へヴィな雰囲気から徐々にヴォーカルが前に出てきて盛り上がっていくという展開で、オリジナル収録曲と比較すると、「バンドの曲」という感じに成長具合が見事に提示されているのがまた凄い。次の作品が本当に楽しみだ。
