50年代半ばの作品ながら、アレンジ重視の優れたアルバム。それもそのはずジジ・グライスという優れた作編曲者のペンによるもの。グライスはパーカー派のアルト・サックス奏者だが、アドリブにおいてもいたるところにバランスよく名曲の部分を引用したり、フェイクしたりできる豊かな才能の持ち主である。しかし、パーカーという巨人、アート・ペッパーやリー・コーニッツというアドリブの才人に一歩及ばない事から、地味でいぶし銀のような存在であった。一方アート･ファーマーも豊かな楽想と安定した演奏のできるトランペッターだが、彼の悲劇はライオネル・ハンプトンの楽団で一緒だったアドリブの天才、クリフォード・ブラウン（1956死去）とプレイし、自らの才能に限界を感じたことと、マイルスという時代を切り開くエモーショナルな天才の後塵を拝した点である。しかし、やがていぶし銀というべき独自路線に活路を見出した。このアルバムでのグライスとの出会いはその頃の事。すなわち名脇役の二人が競演した渋い映画のようなアルバムで、まさにいぶし銀対決なのだが、忘れられない渋い、すばらしい演奏である。特にグライスの選曲と編曲の妙味がハード･バップという荒波の中に美しくも哀しくも、寛いだ名演を実現させたといえよう。
