1959年3月2日、4月22日、ニューヨークで録音。

マイルスの代表作にあげられる本作はモード理論の美しさに充ち満ちたアルバムだ。参加したサイドメンも含め、あたかもクラシックで言えばシンフォニーの1楽章のように自分の与えられたソロ・パートを創意に満ちて純に美しく奏でる。モード理論の純な美がここにある。英語版のライナーではこの中でピアノを弾いているビル・エバンスが『インプロビゼーション・イン・ジャズ』という表題のもとに日本のビジュアル・アートを例えにあげながら解説している。この辺も是非とも一読して欲しいところだ。

閑話休題。本作そして『ラウンド・アバウト・ミッドナイト』はマイルスのアルバムの中で有名評論家諸兄によって代表作としてあげられ、いまだにマイルスのアルバムの中でトップ・セールスを記録しているようだ。ジャズ評論家は各ミュージシャンから3枚くらいずつアルバムを選びだして、『決定盤ジャズ百選』みたいな本を出しているが、その際には本作と『ラウンド・アバウト・ミッドナイト』は必ず入ってくる。しかしながら、そんな聴き方・選び方はマイルスの場合2つの意味で間違っているとぼくは思う。

1.マイルスのような多作かつ偉大なミュージシャンの数枚のアルバムで他のミュージシャンのように理解かつ楽しめる分けがない。
2.マイルスほど最初の『クールの誕生』から遺作『doo-bop』まで変貌を続けたミュージシャンはいない。それを数枚のアルバムで知ることなど不可能だ。

プレスティッジでマラソン・セッションで録音された4部作や渾沌に満ちたジャズ・ファンクの『ビッチズ・ブリュー』、最晩年のマイケル・ジャクソンの『ヒューマン・ネーチャー』の演奏を聴かずしてマイルスを理解し、その偉大な音楽を楽しむことなどできない。それは人生の一番楽しい部分を放棄していることでもあるとぼくは思うのだがいかがだろう。

このアルバムはジャズと呼ばれる音楽の中でも一際輝きを放っている異次元のアルバムなのです。他のジャズとはまったく異なる音楽です。でも、ジャズの中で一番かっこいいアルバムは何か？と問われれば僕は間違いなくこのアルバムを挙げるでしょう。

1959年作品ということだが、これ以来音楽業界は一体何をしていたのだろうと思うほど、新鮮で、今日のどのアルバムより新しい。

So whatは、ピアノのイントロ、ベースのあと、これまで聴いたこともなかったような新鮮な和音が弾かれる。終始ピアノがリードする。トランペットに次いで入ってくるコルトレーンはどう猛さを隠して、急に洗練されて聴こえる。アルトサックスの澄んだ高音は純粋に生理的に気持ちがいい。Freddie freeloaderはエバンス抜きのおまけ。

Blue in greenは、ピアノの和音から入る。マイルスのソロもしびれる。意外にも、コルトレーンにまで寂寥感がひしひしと伝わる。asは抜いてシンプルにし、ピアノの和音 vs マイルスのバラードという対比を明確にしている。All bluesは作品中唯一リズムが強調された曲。やはりマイルスとエバンスの掛け合いが焦点になっている。コルトレーンは壮大な表現。そして総括するかのようなエバンスのソロ。これを聴くと、多々聴かれるライブでのこの曲は少々雑である。

Flamenco sketchesは静かなピアノの主題とベースで始まる。静寂なトランぺットの主題。後のソロの世界につながるかのようなコルトレーンのゆったり気を大きくもったバラード。asのソロを経て、まさに曲の主題である、水表面をゆらゆら漂うようなエバンスが出てきて、最後マイルスが短くまとめる
