サンズ・オブ・チャンプリン~シカゴのヴォーカリストとして活躍したビル・チャンプリンが1978年に発表したソロ・アルバム。デヴィッド・フォスターがプロデュースを手がけ、ファンキーなリズムが印象的なAORの好盤だ。

過去に発売されたCDが長らく廃盤だったため、間違いなくAORファンが待ちに待った再発となるだろう。サンフランシスコのバンド、サンズ・オブ・チャンプリンの活動を経て、ロスでソロへ。この当時、めざましい活動を始めていたデヴィッド・フォスターのプロデュースによる78年作品だ。ジェイ・グレイドンなどキラ星のメンバーが繰り広げる本気の演奏もスゴイし、ライヴなスタジオ・セッションにスコア・メイクしたアンサンブルを加えてまとめあげたフォスターの手腕もスゴイ。これぞ名盤。 (大江田信) --- 2002年10月号

シカゴでの活躍や最近のソロ作品もいいけれど、ビル・チャンプリンと言ったら「独身貴族」「ランナウェイ」の２枚に尽きますね。どちらもデイビッド・フォスターが巨匠になる前のファンキーかつリリカルな時代のプロデュース作品で、ＴＯＴＯ・エアプレイ一派が脇をきっちりと固めています。このアルバムの聴き所は、やはり１曲目の「What Good Is Love」で聞かれるジェイグレイドンの暑苦しいまでのワイヤークワイヤー・ギターでしょう。まあ、その全てを「伴奏」として従えてしまうビルの声にただただ脱帽です。現在発売されているのは２００２年９月の再発売もので金沢寿和氏のライナーノーツも最新情報が満載でオススメです。

ソロとしてのファーストにして最高傑作です！
シカゴでの歌声しか知らない方には以外に
聞こえるかも知れませんが、これが本当の
ビル！！って感じです。
ファンキーで、AORというより昔の表現でいう
「ブルー・アイド・ソウル」という方がピッ
タリします。
デヴィッド・フォスターのプロデュース、
アレンジも素晴らしく、ＬＡ・ＡＯＲの
フルメンバーの如き豪華バックによる演奏は
タイトでぶ厚くて、言うことなし！です。
初期のホール＆オーツや、BOZの「スローダンサー」
〜「シルクディグリース」がお好きな方にはお薦めです。
バラード「We both tried」はＡＯＲ史に残る
珠玉のバラードです。
やっぱり、髭を剃る前のビルがビルらしいなぁ…。
