前作までの３作を「ストリートライフ３部作」とすると、
このアルバムを起点としてアメリカの現実と対峙する作品が
多くなっていく気がする。
その意味では、彼のソングライターとの「視点」が成熟し始めた
原点とも言えるアルバムだ。
「夢と挫折」、「労働」、「親子の絆」、「人生の不条理」と言った、
以降の彼の作品に繰り返し登場する普遍的なテーマが、
ストレートな歌詞と演奏、まっすぐな歌唱によって提示されている。

私的な思い出を語るならば、ライヴの定番でもある01, 06., は、
ある時期の自分にとってはクリスチャンにとってのゴスペルのように、
有り体に言えば応援歌として精神的な救済となったことを
まざまざと記憶している。

数多の人間が自分に問いかけるであろう「人生の意味」を
路上のレースに興じる若者たちに託して炎々と描いた05.,
疾走感あふれる苛烈なラヴソングの09.,
生きることの不条理とそれに立ち向かう意志を示した 10., など、
収録曲のどれもがヘビーである。
「踊れて楽しめて女が口説ける」ロックをお求めの方には
おすすめしないが、多感な時代にこのアルバムを骨の随まで
味わえたことを感謝したくなるような、
アーティストの真摯な思いが結実したマスターピースである。

最高傑作と言えるかどうかは人によって分かれるが、「隠れた名盤」とよく言われる一枚。
アゲアゲR&Rばかりというわけではないが、ライブでの定番ナンバーがたくさん収録されている。
つまりそれだけファンにもブルース本人にも重要なアルバムということだ。
絶望を感じながら、それをぶち破ろうとする強烈な意志の力が音楽として表現されている。
#1や#6や#9など、10〜20代の男性ならば絶対に共感できると思う。

また、ブルースがギターを弾きまくってるのも注目。

私はボスのスタジオ録音のアルバムの中で本作が一番好きです。リアル・タイムでＬＰを購入した時から何度本作を聴いたか数え切れないほど。本作からボスは内省的な傾向を示していきますが、それでも本作は名曲揃いで、スキがない。「レーシング・イン・ザ・ストリート」や「闇に吠える街」のようなスケールの大きな曲も素晴しいですが、エネルギー全開の「バッド・ランド」と「プロミスト・ランド」には理屈ぬきにしびれます。不滅の名曲ばかりが詰まった本作は絶対に買って後悔することはないでしょう。
