1918年、ネブラスカで生まれ育ったロイ・ホッブスは天才的な野球の才能を秘めていた。20歳になったロイはシカゴ・カブスのスカウトマンに卓越した才能を見込まれて、シカゴへ旅立つ。だがそこでロイは、魅惑的な女性ハリエットと知り合い、彼女に銃で撃たれてしまう。それから16年後、弱小チーム、ニューヨーク・ナイツに入団したルーキーは、35歳になったロイだった。・・・
本当に久しぶりに心があったかくなる映画でした。ただ野球に打ち込む熱い男の物語っていうんじゃなくて、オーナーや新聞記者、いろいろな面から描いてあって、とてもよく出来てるなぁ、と感心しました。
この映画、至る所でユーモアが散りばめられているので、球界の暗い部分を正面から描いているのに全然苦しくならない。「ロイ、頑張れ！」って心からロイを応援する自分に気づきました。クライマックスでは、渾身の力を込めて試合をするロイに泣かされっぱなしでした。
今までも父から息子へ伝えられてきた野球。これからも、同じ経路をたどって、少年たちは野球をしていくんでしょうね。ラストを見て、いつの時代も親子のキャッチボールっていいなぁ、と思いました。
