終戦60周年記念、信時潔没後40年記念アルバム。「海ゆかば」は、万葉集の中にある大伴家持の詩「海ゆかば水漬く屍……」に、昭和12年当時東京音楽学校教授の信時潔が曲をつけ大ヒットとなった国民歌謡。本作はこの曲を多角的に検証した作品だ。

何故か知らないが気になる歌詞と曲調。誰に咎められるわけでもないのに聴くのが憚られる奇妙な感覚。そして聴いてるうちに魂が揺さ振られておもわず涙が溢れてしまう。戦争を経験してない世代が何でこんな気分になるのでしょう。一曲一曲がその録音時の時代の空気と想いをよく伝えてるからかもしれません。

２５曲の「海ゆかば」。今を生きている人々がどんな批評をしようとも茶番にしかならないようなそんな気にさせられる。何も考えないでそのままあるがままに聴くのが相応しい封印された至高の名曲を収めたこのアルバムは、当時を生きた人々の鎮魂歌集ということでいいと思う。そして今を生きる私たちは、ただただ散っていった先人たちとそれを支えた人々の想いを感じ取れればこのアルバムの役割は達成されたと思う。

先回までの戦争下で、ほとんどすべての日本人は、戦争を遂行することに邁進せざるを得なかった。それは、時の権力組織が、日本人の古くからの「以和為貴」の精神などと相まって末端まで整備され、統制された結果であろう。その状況は、第2次大戦の進むにつれ完璧の域に限りなく近づいた。

芸術家とてそれらの状況下におかれており、日露戦争時ではあるが与謝野晶子の「君死にたまうことなかれ」などは、極めて稀な例である。音楽家も戦争のための音楽を沢山作っている。そのことは、それら多勢の「努力」のなかから「優れた音楽」が多いに生まれ得ることを示し、実際に生まれた。その最たる例が「海ゆかば」であろう。

最も考えられなければならないのは、それがどう歌われたか、である。このレコードは、「海ゆかば」の25件のバージョンを集録し、聴き比べられるようになっている。ラッパあり、オルガン演奏あり、弦楽四重奏あり、他の歌中への挿入歌あり、合唱あり、独唱ありで歌っている人も多様で寅さんまで入っている。

それぞれを聴きながら、「海ゆかば」をそれぞれ思いながら鑑賞・評価ができるようになっている。
