ソニーロリンズというと緊張感溢れる豪快なブローイングがまず連想される。約三年間の雲隠れ中にウィリアムズバーグ橋で練習をつんでいたらしいが、その後に発表した本作では、今まで以上に余裕ある演奏が素晴らしい。
Sonny Rollins ;tenorsax, Jim Hall ;guitar, Bob Cranshaw ;bass, Ben Riley Or H.T. Saunders ;Drumsのメンバーからなるセッション。例によってソニーのお好きなピアノレス。ギターのホールが甘さを曲に与え、変化を出す役割を果たしている。本作からロリンズのＲＣＡ時代が始まる訳だけど、第二期黄金時代と言っても過言でないほど、高いテンションで充実した演奏振りである。ベテランらしい円熟味も加わり、新たな魅力にも満ちている。ロリンズがお好きな方は是非ＲＣＡのロリンズをどれか一枚お聴き下さい。きっとお気にいるはずです。

2度目の引退後にカムバックした復帰第一作としてあまりにも有名なアルバム。ロリンズを語る際50年代半ばから後半の傑作が定番化しているが、60年代に入ってからのロリンズこそ、再検証すべきだと考える。なぜなら60年代に入ってジャズ界が二つのムーブメントの中で数人のサックス奏者による改革の波にさらされていたからだ。ムーブメントはモード・ジャズとフリージャズ。改革者はコルトレーンとオーネット・コールマンを中心にエリック・ドルフィーらの活躍である。ロリンズの2度目の引退がまさにこの時期にあたるため、当時ロリンズは過去の人というポジションに甘んじなければならなかった。しかしあまりに画一化したコルトレーンイデオムに対し、真に創造的で才能と技術を必要とされるロリンズの音楽性はかけがえのないものであったに違いない。このアルバムに聴かれるロリンズ節はおおらかで、やさしく力強い。橋という標題の由来は復帰前の彼がブロンクスとマンハッタンを結ぶウィリアムバーク橋の上で、サックスの練習をしていたという逸話と重なる。ウィザウト・ア・ソング、ホエア・アー・ユー、ゴッド・ブレス・ザ・チャイルド、ユー・ドゥ・サムシング・トゥ・ミーといったスタンダード解釈は自信に満ちゆったりとしたジャズの素晴らしさを伝えるし、ジョン・S、橋などのオリジナルからはロリンズの意気込みと覇気が伝わってくる。当時、デクスター・ゴドン、スタン・ゲッツといったベテランの復帰、若手のウェイン・ショーター、ジョー・ヘンダーソンらもデビューし60年代ジャズはまさに百科繚乱の様相を呈するのだ。
