桑田さんがヒットを狙ってその通りメガヒットになった奇跡の曲。
彼の詩は前半絶望、後半希望を持たせて終わる構成が多いが、文法的にミスがあってもなんら気にするまでのことはない。これほど幅広い年齢層に親しまれている曲も近年珍しいのではないか。コンサートの最後に彼は「死ぬなよ。絶対死ぬなよ。」と呼びかけることが多くなった。おじさんｲ泣けるなぁ。生きている間にこれだけの曲に巡り合えるかどうか・・・

最高にいい歌だと思います。それは誰しも思うことだと思います。
けど歌詞中の「わびしさ」っての分かりますか？
当時、お付き合いさせて貰ってた彼女が「わびしさ」って分かる？と、
聞いてきました。僕には分かりませんでした。
４０歳になったら分かるよ。と、言われました。
あと１３年後にこの歌聞いて何を感じるか・・・どうなんでしょ？
「わびしさ」の意味が分かったらこの歌聞いて大泣きするそうです。
尻の青い若造にはこの歌はまだ早いそうです。

サザンはおちゃらけている様なパフォーマンスでありながら、業界全体をも踏まえて音楽という活動と真摯に向き合ってきたことは周知の事実ですね。

桑田さんの歌う曲はどれも確固とした音楽理論に裏打ちされていて、
そのメロディーは譜面を見ればミスチルなどよりもはるかに細かく設定されているのです。

そこに、ベテランならではの情緒や心の表現の深みをブレンドする。

だから、この王道バラードとなった「TSUNAMI」を含めて、彼の歌っている姿からは曲がやさしく思えますが、
カラオケで素人がまともに真似するのは決して容易ではないんですね。(自分含む)
サザンの歌を人に聴かせられるレベルで歌える方は大変稀少ですので、もし見つけたら大事にしてください(笑)

そんな難解な曲の一方で人を楽しませることを決して忘れない、
サザンという超一流のエンターティナー、真の音楽家の早期復活が望まれます。

ちなみにこの「TSUNAMI」は当時人気だったTVの恋愛バラエティー番組、「未来日記」のテーマソングとして、感動を生みました。
