Ｕ-571や、レッドオクト-バーを追えなどの潜水艦バトルのある映画として期待している人は手を出さない方が吉。
ソナーでの敵の探知、水中での駆け引きなどは一切ありませんので・・・。
あくまで人間ドラマがメインです。
舞台はソ連の原子力潜水艦ではありますが、テーマは冷戦下における核の脅威であり、冷戦時代に実際におきた、原潜での放射能漏れ事故を再現ドキュメントという感じに描いています。

ハリソン・フォードが、憎まれ役の艦長を好演しています。

劇中のシーンで、放射能漏れした区画の修理を行う為、作業員が、放射能で汚染された区画に入るのですが、軍から支給された装備は対科学兵器用の防護服で、放射能には全く効果なしのただの雨ガッパのようなもの。
それでもあなたなら、仲間の為に入りますか？？？

地球上に住む私たち人間の命は、一部の人間に握られているのですね。被爆しながら、仲間の命を救うために原子炉を必死に修理する若い海兵たちの姿が痛ましい…。

この映画の言語がロシア語だったら五つ星です。英語を話すロシア兵では説得力に欠けます。メル・ギブソン監督の『パッション』は、当時の言語、アラム語とヘブライ語を使用しており、作品に強烈なリアリティを生み出していました。

部下たちは副艦長のニーソンの方を慕っていることを見てみない振りの艦長フォード。ニーソンも気付いていた。何かと判断が対立する２人だったが、ニーソンは２人の立場を部下達にはっきりと判らせる。この場面、見所の一つだった。その後、部下も艦長フォードに敬意を示すようになる。フォードとニーソンの体格が違う。ニーソンの方が大きい。立場はフォードの方が上。「ニーソンが下を向いて上官と話す」見た目の不自然さが実に良かった。

事故の原因も、対応もあまりにもお粗末。しかし実話とあれば仕方ない。いかにも旧ソ連らしい原潜事故という最悪のトラブルに、命懸けで立ち向かう乗組員たちの姿が実に生々しく凄惨で釘付けになる。

自らを犠牲にして危機に立ち向かった男たちのヒューマンドラマ。英雄になどならずに普通の原潜乗組員でいたかっただろうに、と思わずには居られない。
