当時の最強タッグ松本隆・筒美京平コンビによる“哀愁トゥナイト”“セクシャルバイオレットNo.1”がヒットした時は、確かにセールス的にはレコード会社の思惑通り正解だったのかもしれない。しかし “月のあかり”や“夜の海”“醒めたユメ”などを大切に思っていた俺達は『あ~あ、歌謡界に持って行かれるのか…』と、どうしようもない淋しさを覚えたものでした。 日本ロック史に残る（と、俺は思ってる）名盤『ロードマシーン』を擦り切れるほど聴いていた頃からもはや20年以上が経過してしまいました。桑名さんも年齢を重ね、その歌い回しにも『ため過ぎやん(＾-＾)』と感じるところもあるけど、やっぱ上手いわ。ただ折角の晴子さんとのハモがため過ぎのせいでビミョ~にずれているのがちょっと残念かな？
俺にとっては大変思い入れの強い桑名さんだからこそ、敢えて苦言を呈します。『お~い桑名さ~ん、ちょびっと堀内孝雄入りかけてるよ~』『（俺も大好きな曲だしリスペクトもしてるけど）なにも桑名さんが“涙そうそう”唄うことははないんじゃないっすか？』年とともに確かに自分の聴く音楽も変わってきたけれど、ヴォーカリストも同様に唄いたい曲が変わってくるものなんでしょうか？やっぱ、“しらけちまうぜ”とか“セントラルパーク”とかの方が聴きたかったなあ。あのSCORPIONSですらunpluggedをだしたように“哀愁”も“セクシャル”もいらないから生ギターだけの大人のロックが聴きたかった（ただし、このアルバムでの藤丸氏のギターは昔のまんまクールだし、平松加奈嬢のヴァイオリンはとても綺麗。彼女のSPANISH CONNECTIONというユニットの二枚目のアルバム“カリエンテ”に収められているリベルタンゴの早弾きは一聴の価値あり）。色々グチりましたが桑名ファンは是非聴いてみて下さい。次が出たらどうせ買ってしまいます。それだけの魅力を持ったアーティストであることに変わりはないですから。

「マハロ」の曲目が中心となったライブ盤が聴けるなんてビックリ。しかも日本のロックを表舞台に押し上げるきっかけになった名曲「哀愁トゥナイト」まで含まれていてうれしい限り。しかしそれ以上に感激なのは桑名の「シンガー」としての実力。本当に「うまいなあ」って唸ってしまいました。ファンで無い人にも自信をもって薦められる作品です。
