   タイトルの『Man-Made』は、ティーンエイジ・ファンクラブにまつわる根強い、メロディアスでクラシックなインディー・ポップで、バッドフィンガーやビッグスター風でと言ったイメージを混乱させる危険がある。まるでスコットランドの4人組がいつものオーガニックな感覚からそれて、これまでにないような刺激的なシンセの音を採用したのではないかと不安になったファンもいるだろう。

   バンドは7枚目となるアルバムのためにスタジオに戻り（最初はトータスのジョン・マッキンタイアのプロデュースによりアメリカで録音された）、メンバーのうち天賦の才能をもつソングライター3人は1990年の結成以来の才能を今回もパワーアップしている。ノーマン・ブレイク、ジェラルド・ラヴ、レイモンド・マッギンレイはそれぞれ4曲ずつを書いた。いつものように自分が作った曲でリード・ヴォーカルを取り、完璧なロック・フリークの作品を作っている。直球で軽快な「It's All in My Mind」（ブレイク作）が、よりハードなロックでリフが効いた「Time Stops」（ラヴ作）や誠実な「Feel」（マッギンレイ作）より強力だろうか？　とどのつまり、正しい答えはそんなことはどうでもいい、となる。ティーンエイジ・ファンクラブが戻ってきた、そこが肝心だ。彼らのヴァイヴは時を超えて、誰もの心を打ち、これまでと変わらぬ満足感を与えてくれる。（Tammy La Gorce, Amazon.com）

4.0 out of 5 stars 「変わることの大切さと変わらない大切さ」, 2005/5/10
　今回その狭間にある作品だという第一印象を受けました。劇的な変化はないものの、着実な変化を感じさせられます。それは一つはプロデューサーのジョン・マッケンタイアに因る所が大きいと思いますが、やはり際立つのはジェリー作の曲で、彼の好きなサイケやソウルをふんだんにとり込んだ曲調が多く意欲が感じられることに共感を覚えます。ノーマンは曲作りに関して言えば、冒頭の“It's All In My Mind ”はハウディの“Accidental Life”っぽく、5曲目のわずか２分足らずのアップビートチューン“Slow Fade”なんかはいかにもノーマン！って感じですけど、ストリングスとハープシコードなどで新たな風味を加えています。
　ここまでは新譜のいい面ばかり取り上げてきたのですが、ファンとして気がひけるのですが負の印象もかかせていただくと、楽曲がジョンのプロデュースの枠の中にキレイに収まりすぎているように感じます。トータスに思い入れない者にとってこういう音響はどうもすぐにはフィットしてきません。個人的には彼らの持つ牧歌的な良さが薄まっている感じがします。音のこだわりよりもシンプルに声をフィーチャーして欲しかったって本音も正直あります。
　その中にあって今作のおいてのレイモンドの貢献度が大きいように思います。前作ハウディでの彼の作る曲からもそうですが、ここ近年彼が1番のっている気が個人的には感じるのです。自分がこの作品で一番気に入ってるのは実は彼の“Feel ”ということもありますが、1番ジョンのアレンジにレイモンドの声と節回しがマッチしているとも思うのです。
　いろいろと書きましたが、自レーベルからの彼らの新たの出発を応援し支持し続ける気持は変わることはないでしょう。

英グラスゴーの重鎮ギターロックバンド
ティーンエイジ・ファンクラブの
自身のレーベルPeMaからのリリースとなる
5年ぶりとなる2005年新作。
プロデュースはジョン・マッケンタイア。
ジャケットのアートワークは
グラスゴーの盟友PastelsのAggiが手掛けた。

彼らの素晴らしいところは
3人のソングライターが手がける
ソングライティングのクォリティ、
普遍的なメロディ感覚、
ピュアなポップネスだと思うのだが
この新作では
熟成されたなめらかさ、
豊潤な柔らかさが、より感じられ
それでいて、瑞々しさを失わない
際立った仕上がりを見せていて
感動的だ。

ギター・ロック、ギター・ポップの
お手本的なギター・サウンド。
3人のシンガーが織りなす
ソフィスティケイトされた
ヴォーカル＆ハーモニー。
自在に繰り出すフィード・バック。

米オルタナティブへの敬意と
故郷グラスゴーへの深い愛情、
なにより、
音楽が好きでたまらないという
彼らの姿勢が、
良質の音楽を生み出す源泉となっているのだろう。

聴いていて、本当に心地よい。

さわやかな風と新鮮な空気と
生命の息吹が満ちているような音たち。

89年のデビュー以来
16年を経ても、なお新鮮な彼らは
やはり、素晴らしい。

先のサマーソニック05では
轟音ヴァージョンを
楽しそうに披露してくれた
ノーマン・ブレイクの笑顔と
シャイなレイモンド・マッギンレーの姿が
印象的だった。

5.0 out of 5 stars もう１つの”名盤・好盤”のあり方, 2005/7/20
ベスト盤リリース後、初のフル・アルバムです。
前作「Howdy！」から、実に４年半振りとなります。
と言っても、その間にJad Fairとの共演作「Words Of Wisdom And Hope」という素晴らしい作品を届けてくれましたが。
また、今回は自分達で立ち上げた新しいレーベルからのリリースとなりました。
いろいろな意味で、新たな第一歩となる作品と言えるでしょう。

さて内容の方も、前作までの流れとはやや一線を画す様なものになっていると思います。
一般的なイメージであり、またここ数作でも一貫していた「メロディー第一主義」のような作品ではなく、
むしろＴＦＣというバンドの持つ空気感を、純粋培養したような印象を受けます。
彼らの場合は演奏が特に上手いといったことはなく、むしろリズム面ではやや難がある、ぐらいの印象を持っていたのですが
このアルバムでは引き締まったバンド・サウンドを、持ち味を消す事なく鳴らしています。
この辺りはJohn McEntire(ex. Tortoise, The Sea And Cake)のプロデュース・ワークの賜物なのでしょうか。

確かに一発で引き込まれるような歌メロは減りましたが、その分バンドとしての強度を増し、曲もコンパクト（全て５分未満）で
何度も聴き帰したくなるアルバムです。
僕は彼らの作品の中では「Grand Prix」が一番好きなんですが、このアルバムはまたそれとは異なる色使いのものとして、好きになりました。
メロディー重視かバンドとしての強度重視かどちらの方が良い、というものではなく、これもまたＴＦＣの魅力なんですよね。
つくづくいいバンドだと思います。
