grant greenの最初のリーダー作。編成はオルガントリオ。

本作は61年初頭の吹込みであるため、まだ後に…“(ソウル寄り)BLUE NOTEサウンドのハウス・リズム”…と称されたjohn patton(organ)が参加していず、ここではソウルジャズ黎明期を担ったbaby face willetteである。よく考えるとgreenにとってだいぶ古い録音にあたる。

再生ボタンを押した途端ben dixonのフィルが炸裂するのが圧巻。思わずのけ反ってしまった(笑)。テーマ前(未収録)部分で熱っぽいやり取りが交わされていたのだと思われる。この冒頭“miss ann's tempo”に限らず、スローテンポの曲も含め全曲にわたり異常に“熱い”。
60年〜61年初頭のrudy van gelderの録音は(他の時期に比べても)非常にエコーが強く、そのせいでこの時期にRVGが関わった録音盤はどれもすぐに分かってしまう。本作もこの“エコー期”のど真ん中にあたる。各種ドラムもオルガンも、音の鳴りが重厚きわまる。

英文ライナーで、greenもwilletteも異口同音に…“影響はいろいろあるけど、やっぱりcharlie parkerがインスピレーションの源泉だよ”…と語っている。そのせいで、本作を聴く時は頭の隅で常にparkerを意識してしまう。オルガンジャズなのに。
でも、確かにここでgreenもwilletteも“バップ”である。あえてハードバピッシュといってよいかもしれない。後の鷹揚なソウルジャズではなく、“黒い”グルーヴが横溢しています。本作特有のバピッシュな黒さは、後に大量生産される諸々の“コテコテ盤”では聴かれません。willetteの音色は暗くて沈鬱、かつハードでパンチが効いている。dixonの煽りも凄い。ここでdixonは文字通り“巧過ぎ”ます。greenのソロは初期といえ、後と全く(いい意味で)変わらない。その点でも安心して聴けると思う。
