4.0 out of 5 stars マクリーン、一時休戦一歩手前の名演奏。, 2005/7/26
~1967年に録音されたマクリーン節炸裂のアルバム。とは言っても「集中力にムラはあるにしてもどのアルバムでもマクリーンは炸裂しているじゃないか」と言えばそれまでだが、プレイの良さばかりでなく、本作には名曲「スイート・ラヴ・オブ・マイン」が収録されているのが特徴。このボサ調のマイナー曲はジャズのかっこよさを教えてくれる資料の一つと言ってもい~~いんじゃないかと思う。
バンドサウンドとしては、一時期のフリーキー路線ほどではないが、やはり時代の波というのか、コルトレーン以降のアヴァンギャルド路線とハンコックをはじめとする都会的路線が混じり合ったような印象を受けるが、マクリーンはその中でもパーカーの呪縛からさらに進歩した、あの、悲しくないのに胸を締め付けるような独特のあじわい~~を前面に出して吹きまくっている。ちなみにドラムスはジャック・ディジョネット。こちらも叩きまくっている。

このアルバムを最後にブルーノートとの契約は終了、再契約する事もなく、72年の「アット・モンマルトル」まではアルバムを発表する事なく、ジャズマンとしては半ば引退に近い形で沈黙する。~

タイトル曲の「デモンズ・ダンス」はマクリーンのオリジナルでジャック・ディジョネットが奮闘している印象の強い曲です。
内容も多彩で都会的な洗練と優雅さが同居しているような感じです。
２曲目の「トイランド」は顎が落ちそうなくらいに甘い、甘〜〜〜いバラードです。
ここまで甘い曲もそうはない。
この曲のためにアルトサックスという楽器は作られた？と感じるくらいピッタリの曲です。
有名な「スイート・ラヴ・オブ・マイン」以外にも全編いい曲ぞろいなので聴いてみても損はないかも。
お勧めです。

こういう忘れさられた録音がCD化され、喜ばしい限りだ。若きディジョネットが素晴らしい。ウディーも勿論素晴らしいのだが、まだ彼のスタイルが完成される前の時期で、後期の彼を期待すると多少消化不足だ。sweet love of mine も彼が80年代初めにmusician rebel に収めたものの方が圧倒的に素晴らしいし、マクリーンのソロもいまいち。（ちなみに80年頃だったか、日本でウディーのバンドにマクリーンがゲストで演奏した事があったが、その時の演奏は本当に熱かった。）それとピアノが良くない。バラードは悪くないが、後の演奏は興ざめ。ただアルバムとして、この頃の音が好きな硬派ジャズファンには是非聴いて欲しい。
