　ハードバップの誕生を告げた1954年２月の歴史的ライブ「A Night at Birdland」をものにした Art Blakey(ds)、Clifford Brown(tp)、Horace Silver(p)は、それぞれ独立して Jazz Messengers、Brown-Roach Quintet、Horace Siver Quintet のモダンジャズ中核バンドを率いていくことになる。
　1959年にようやく Gene Taylor(b)、Roy Brooks(d) に Blue Mitchell(tp) ＆ Junior Cook(ts)のフロントを得た Horace Silver Quintet は「Blowin’ the Blues Away」「Horace-Scope」の傑作を連発、その「ファンキー・ハードバップ」と呼ばれるスタイルの1961年ライブがこれだ。
　「頭でも何でも、もう振れるものは何でも振ってグルーヴに乗ってくれ」という冒頭のアナウンスからしてファンキー。下世話にシフトしたリズムと低音域でンゴンゴ唸りまくる Horace のピアノ、抜群の構成力で破竹のソロをとる Cook 、覇気を込めながらメロディアスな Mitchell とバンド全体が発火状態にある。
