   巨大な頭の老女、脚の筋肉だけが異常に発達した青年、ビア樽のように太った犬。特徴が極端に描かれ、一見、気味の悪いキャラクターを、これほどまで魅力的に見せるアニメも珍しい。戦後間もないフランス。マダム・スーザは孫のシャンピオンに自転車の才能があると知り、彼をツール・ド・フランスに出場させる。しかしレース中にシャンピオンは誘拐され、スーザは海を渡り、大都会「ベルヴィル」で孫を捜すのだった。
   全編、ほとんどセリフなし。人物の行動と表情だけでストーリーを伝えるのは、フランス出身のシルヴァン・ショメ監督。あえて手描き風にこだわったノスタルジックな絵や、ちょっぴりグロテスクな描写の数々は、どこか、おとぎ話の世界に迷い込ませるような魔力を持っている。線路脇に建つ傾いた家や、ニューヨークのようなベルヴィルなど、あらゆる背景にも目を奪われる。さらに注目すべきは音楽で、物語のカギとなる三姉妹の老婆が歌うマイナー調のスウィングジャズや、大海原で流れるクラシックなどが強いインパクト。そしてフレッド・アステア、ジャック・タチへのオマージュ…と、見どころを書いたらキリがない！（斉藤博昭）

本編が80分なのに2層ディスクになってます。特典映像に高畑勲×シルバン・ショメの対談（約40分）と完成披露試写会の様子（約10分）、劇場予告編映像が入って2時間を越したためです。このおかげでキャッシュを備えていないDVDプレイヤーで観ると、本編の一部分で一瞬不自然に止まります。しかもここが後半の盛り上がり始めたところなので、見ている側に不快感を与えます。このつくりはなんとかならなかったのかと言いたい。しかも対談の部分がつまらない。編集にテンポがなく途中で寝てしまいました。本編を壊すような特典映像は入れるべきではありません。本編がおもしろいだけに、こんな日本語版DVDを作ってしまったメーカーを非常に残念に思います。

まず、キャラクターがかなり独特。体の一部のパーツを強調していて強烈です（マフィアの肩だとか）。でもストーリー自体は起承転結があって分かりやすく、セリフが少なくても結構観れます。そして何よりＢＧＭが最高！！特に日用品を使った演奏がすごいです。

明るいストーリーに見え隠れする哀愁、登場人物は皆庶民なのですが、現実のほろにがさがよくでてます。
とにかく観て損はありません！ぜひみてみてください。

映画館で４回観ました。
まだ観たりない。
観れば観るほど味があります。
サントラもおしゃれでかっこいい。

台詞が殆どなく、それでいて物語が解りやすく、
またユーモアたっぷりに進行するのは、
個性的で可愛いキャラクターによる所が大きいと思います。

おしゃれだけどダサイ。

そんなフランスアニメにはまりそーです。
あーDVD早く出ないかな！
