　スパイク・リー監督・製作・脚本・出演。真夏日、ＮＹの黒人街を舞台とした群像劇。人種間をめぐるちょっとしたすれ違いを嚆矢として、平和な街の歯車が狂い始め、悲しい事件が起きる。

　ＮＹドジャースのジャッキー・ロビンソンのレプリカユニフォームを着たスパイク。ランＤＭＣの「fight power」。ブラックパワーの矜持を示し、また黒人街の矛盾も冷静に見つめている。監督はおそらくアファマーティブ・アクション問題にも関心があるのではないか。

　イタリア系、コリアン系、アイルランド系（警官）。その狭間に生まれた不寛容（イントレランス）が悲劇を連鎖増幅していく。あまりに根深いこの問題の答えを映画は用意していない。また、日本に暮らす日本人にはあまりに遠くの話でもある。ピザ屋の親父の誇りも、集団の暴力の前では無力であった。最後にあらわれるキング牧師とマルコムＸの「暴力」についての相違する見解が重くのしかかる。

　「正しいことをする」ことの野蛮さは、それが正しいゆえにとめられないのかもしれない

アジア人から見た白人VS黒人の人種問題の困惑は、鬼才スパイク・リーのこの映画、ドゥ・ザ・ライト・シングのワンシーンに全て集約されとります。
８９年頃にはそれまで黒人しかいなかった貧民街に韓国人がいっぱい入って来て、小さなマーケットとかも経営するようになってきており、安穏としていた黒人達を尻目に、必死に上を目指してバリバリ頭角を現して来た時期。もちろん黒人はそれが気に入らない。小競り合いが続く中、黒人の悪ガキどもが韓国マーケットを荒らすシーンで、韓国人の店主が、
「何でこんなことする？！俺たちは同じじゃないか、同じ人間同士なんだよ！」
と叫ぶ。すると黒人達が一斉に、
『はあっ？？？俺とオマエと同じだって、ナニ馬鹿なこといってんだ。コイツ。ホントに馬鹿だね、はっはっは』
とあざ笑うのです。
この精神状態をして差別問題をこじらせる元凶なんだなぁ、とすごく納得。
この後、９２年にロスの暴動があったのもなるほどです。
白人が奴隷として連れて来た黒人。しかし何世代もの間、骨の髄まで俺はオマエのようにはなれないのだと叩き込まれて、負け犬根性に慣れきってしまった若者よ、ドゥ・ザ・ライト・シング！というスパイク・リーのメッセージは判りやすくて、キツイものでした。それから１５年以上経つけど、現状打開というのは時間がかかるんだなぁ。

NYの下町、ブルックリン（さまざまな有名アーティストやバンドを輩出している）を舞台にどこにでもあるピザ屋を中心にストーリーは進んでいく。
とにかくめちゃくちゃおもしろい。コメディ的なおもしろさではなく、白人、黒人、アジア、南米などさまざまな国から本当にたくさんの移民を抱える街だかろこそ、愉快に見れる最高にクールな映画だ。
NYには世界の経済を動かしている一面もある一方、やはり市民の暮らしもある。市民のうっぷんがたまった時代に作られた、上へ上がるための映画。
