パープルの代名詞＝リッチー・ブラックモアは、このアルバムを残しグループを脱退。リッチー在籍の最後を飾る超話題作！！

【プロフィール】
ジョン・ロード(key)、リッチー・ブラックモア(g)、ロッド・エヴァンス(vo)、ニック・シンパー(b)、イアン・ペイス(ds)により1968年に結成され、アルバム『ハッシュ』でデビュー。70年イアン・ギラン(vo)とロジャー・グローヴァー(b)を迎えた“第2期ディープ・パープルで、『イン・ロック』『マシン・ヘッド』といったハード・ロックの古典といえる名作を発表。73年にデヴィッド・カヴァーデイルがギランの後任として加入(“第3期パープル)し、『紫の炎』などを発表。75年のブラックモア脱退に伴いトミー・ボーリンを加え、『カム・テイスト・ザ・バンド』を発表するが、76年に解散。84年に“第2期のメンバーで再結成。その後ブラックモアの脱退、ロードの引退などがあり、メンバー・チェンジを経ながらも活動を継続中。

4.0 out of 5 stars リッチーがファンク、ソウルを演奏する唯一の作品, 2006/11/14
このアルバムの前作「バーン」は大ヒットし、第３期のメンバーも多くの
人に受け入れられました。前作で大成功しただけに、本作での比較批判が
やたらと多いです。このアルバムは「イン・ロック」以降の路線を期待
して聴くと肩すかしに合いますが、常に新しい音楽を探しているような
人は楽しめると思います。ソウル、ファンクと、リッチー・ブラックモア
が嫌いな音楽も積極的に取りこみ密度が高く幅が広がった作品です。

のちの、グレン・ヒューズ・ソロ活動に通づる作風である事から推測する
に、グレンも積極的に曲作りに参加したのだと思います。

でも、当時のリッチー・ブラックモアは、ディープパープル内での
デヴィット・カバーデール、ゲレン・ヒューズの自己主張を毛嫌っていて、
舵とりが出来ないバンドに嫌気がさし結果、本作完成後にリッチーは
脱退した。そして、リッチーは自分の居場所「レインボー」を結成した。

当時のリッチーの心を写したようなラストナンバー「ソルジャー・オブ・
フォーチュ−ン」は、ディープ・パープル最高のバラードだと思います。

このアルバムではリッチーのギターはかなり抑え目になってしまっているしブルースやファンクの要素が大分強くなってしまっているので、リッチーファンには全くお薦めできないですが、グレンとデイヴィッドのヴォーカルがとてもよく生きた内容になっています。もしもベースがグレンヒューズじゃなかったらリッチーパープルがもっと続いていたと思うと残念でなりません。

「BURN」の大成功の後に引き続き発表された第３期DPの最後のスタジオアルバムです。ご存知のようにブラックモアはメンバーとの音楽観の相違から、このアルバムを最後に脱退してしまいます。

ジョン・ロードは当初、ジャズとクラシックとロックを融合した作品にしようと構想を温めていたそうですが、スティーヴィー・ワンダー好きのファンキー志向のグレン・ヒューズとマーヴィン・ゲイをリスペクトするというソウル音楽好きのデヴィッド・カヴァーデイルの若い2人の勢いに負けて、結果として「黒人音楽は好きだけどファンキー音楽は嫌い」という偏屈者・ブラックモアの脱退という事態を招いてしまいます。そんな背景を頭に入れながら、この作品を聴くと「確かにリッチー脱退も仕方ないか」と納得せざるを得ません。

賛否両論がどうしても多いこの作品ですが、それでも「嵐の使者」「嵐の女」という素晴らしい名曲を聴かせてくれます。個人的にはブラックな魅力が一杯の６曲目「You Can't Do It Right」もお気に入りです。あとは残念ながら「DPらしさ」という点では特筆できる曲が見当たらないのが口惜しいのですが、わずか30数分というミニアルバムのような作品の中に、わずか3曲でも「一生ものの名曲」を提供してくれるあたりはDPの底力を感じさせます。
